Installed memorex mvd2042 dvd player, receive message "root"

Just connected memorex mvd2042 dvd player to my sharp hdtv. Put in a new disc received from Best Buy. The dvd player seems to go on and the play button lights up as well as the open/close button. The disc does not play, in the window it shows dvd in tiny letters. I pressed play button and receive message that says "root". The only buttons that seem to work are the power button and the open and close button. When I connected the dvd player to the hdtv using the user's guide it looks as though I connected it correctly with the audio left and audio right and the video connection. I just don't know what to do now.
