I can only see the top left corner of my laptop, about the size of a half dollar coin. On the external monitor i plugged in the only thing I see is my desktop background. No icons, cant see the mouse arrow, or the start button

You somehow changed your display settings to show desktop and not what it normally should be which is to mimic what you normally see on your laptop's lcd screen. You can do this by going to start_control panel_display settings or right click on the desktop and click properties then click display settings and make sure the "extend the desktop onto this monitor is checked." Make sure the cable is plugged in for the TV and is connected.

Go into your display settings. It should show at least two different monitors. Your laptop monitor and the external one your plugged into. Click on the external one and click on the two check boxes. Click on extend the desktop into this monitor first. Then click on this is my main monitor. Reboot your computer and it should be on your external monitor.

Laptop broken screen... plugged in Dell monitor, still doesnt work

You can switch to an external monitor or data projector by two methods. 1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor. 2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key. Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :- IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7 HP and Compaq = Fn + F4 Toshiba = Fn + F5 Dell = Fn + F8

Monitor will not light up, laptop works fine using external monitor

The screen could be cracked or broken altogether from pixel damage. If so, there's not much you can do to fix it. Check your settings and put them at the lowest resolution and lowest quality settings while connected to an external monitor. Good Luck!

ACER cracked screen..external monitor???

Hi there.
The keyboard toggle you are using is the correct one.
Sometimes you have to hit Fn + F5 a couple of times to stay on there is no real set time. Make sure Fn + F6 is on so the laptop screen stays on.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
