Is this a lockset that is inserted into the side of the door or is it mounted on the outside of the door. About how old is it. It looks to be on older lock. Does it function properly? do you just need more door knobs for it?

Exterior door stuck closed manually retract ****** remove knobs KWIKSET

You will probably need to replace the latch assembly. There is a small rivet that holds part of the latch together, and it also acts as a pivot point for a small piece that retracts the latch. If it gets bent, the latch won't retract fully, but you might be able to push it back and get the door open.

My exterior door lock (Kwikset) is stuck shut. The knob will not turn. I removed the knobs and tried to pull the mechanism back - but unable to. The door is therefore stuck shut.

Get a big scredriver and put it in the square in the middle of the mechanism and turn it till it opens, or you will just have to pry it out with the scredriver.

I have 3 door knobs on outside doors that are loose and need to be tightened. the knobs have come completely off sometimes when we go out the doors. how do I tighten the knobs so they are not loose?

On the inside side of the door knob, there is a decorative plate. Depending on which model door knobs you have, it is held on with a "set-screw" that might require an allen-wrench (looks like an 8-sided tool; usually in an L-shape), or just simply a screw driver, to loosen and remove it. Once you take the decorative plate off, there will be two very obvious screws that hold both sides (inside and outside) of the door knob together. Tighten these screws to tighten your knobs, then put the decorative plates back on again.

The inside door knob came off of the Kwikset keyed door lock. How do I re-attach the knob?

There is probably a small set screw (hex head) on the bottom of the knob. If that doesn't work try just pushing it back on.

Can't remove the disk that covers the screws to tighten door handle with lock

Hi, W/D here.
Kwikset has basically two styles of cover plates.
If you are on the locking side of the door and facing the knob you'll either see two screw heads (one on either side of the knob), or you see only the cover plate.
It sounds like you have the cover plate type. Here's how to get to the screws:
1. Feel the underside of the knob, and you'll feel a slot with a tab sticking through it.
2. With a fine bladed screwdriver, press the tab up into the slot, and pull the knob towards you.
3. With the door knob off, look around the edge of the trim ring for a screw driver slot. Insert the screw driver and gently pry the trim ring up.
4. You're there!
5. Re-assembly is in the reverse order. When you go to put the knob back on, you'll probably have to use the screw driver to push in the tab as you slide the knob back on.
Best regards, --W/D--

I am replacing my door knob and replacing it with similar lock door knob by Kwikset. I measured from the end of the door to the middle of the hole where the knob goes into which is 2 3/8". The problem...

Most kwikset locksets will work on either 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inch setback. There should be two holes on the latch where door knobs fit thru the door. If yours does not have this option I would suggest that you get one that will match your setback.Hope this helps.Thanks.

Problems changing a doorknob

If there are no visable screws on the inside of the door than there is a cover plate that can be removed by prying it off with a small screwdriver revealing the screws. Please remember to rate my answer

Too long backset on new Door Knob for older home's door

You can get a variety of backsets at a GOOD door/ window company.
You may also want to look closely at the lock bolt again, because some of them come with a backset adjuster. Some of the Schlage and Kwiksets will allow you to twist the barrel and change the backset...

My door handle came apart and now I have the pieces and don't know how to put them back together. Kwikset, chelsea door handle.

I assume the latch mechanism is still intact... the piece on the edge of the door that locks inside the strike plate when the door is shut -- if that's the case the only thing left to do is align the two knobs, one on iether side of the door, making sure the shaft goes thru the latch mechanism properly (it only fits thru one way) and then sandwich it tightly to the door and tighten it together with a phillips head screwdriver... some kwikset locks require you to turn one of the knobs to get the bolt heads to seat properly.

I'm not familiar with the chelsea model but they are all very similar... if you have more than the 2 knobs with a long shaft on one then chances are the solution above does not apply... you probably will have a knob with shaft and then a flat plate with holes, a finished plate and a plain knob... in this case align the knob and shaft thru the latch mechanism, place the plate with holes on the other side of the door and twist it slightly so the bolt heads lock in and tighten the bolts to the plate... now snap the finished plate over that and push the knob over the exposed shaft that remains... you'll need a flat head screw driver to lock the knob on where a small spring loaded piece fits into a cutout on the handle...

that's about the best I can explain it.
