To answer your question I have used standard capacitors (metal cased) to replace the ones used on domestic refrigerators and had no adverse effects. The only consideration is wiring length and physical size.

First Check the voltage to the compressor. Usually just 2 wires. If you do not have voltage and you are sure it should be running (it is turned on and plugged in) Check the controller (thermostat or Sensor/board assembly) because your problem is not with the compressor as of yet.
Assuming you have power to the compressor and the fan motor there is running up to speed the coils under neath are clean here are the items to look for to check out your compressor:

Getting to this step: Either your compressor is broken inside or the start components are not working properly. Ohm the compressor terminals to ground and across to each other.

If any read anything to ground the compressor is bad.
Your readings between the compressor terminals should all be different and you should have 1 low 1 medium and 1 high resistance reading.
Add the low and mid reading together and the sum should be close to the highest reading. If it reads say 20% more or less then retest it a couple of times to confirm your not slipping on the terminals.
Assuming the above checks out: Get a new Start relay (start capacitor if so equipped) relay and overload (and capacitor if it has one) In other words everything that is external and attached to the wires or terminals on the compressor, and replace them on to the compressor. Then if it starts problem solved if it still does same thing the compressor is bad (broken mechanically inside the compressor) and you have to decide to replace compressor or replace the refrigerating compressor be it AC or Refrigeration.
.
A few times I have gotten a compressor to start after leaving it off for 6 to 12 hours then retrying it. See the compressor unless left off for 6 to 12 hours and sometimes as long as 24 hours Is tight due to linear expansion from heat. And about 1/2 the time it is ok after new start components are installed. The other 1/2 the compressor will be ok for a day or 2 then stop again. Most likely from a “hard spot” in the movement of the internal parts in the compressor.

30 years of doing refrigeration and this has not changed.
Please rate me as high as you can and ask me to clarify anything you don’t understand.

Maytag MZD2766GES. Not cooling freezer not freezing

In most cases this is caused when the compressor oveload and start relay fail. In some of these cases a run capacitor is also needed to be replaced. Click Here=> 12002784 Relay and Overload Kit and here=> 65889-4 Run Capacitor How you find this problem is to pull refrigerator away from wall and then quickly unplug, remove lower paper cover at bottom of refrigerator back covering compressor and fan w/condenser. Place hand on top of compressor and if too hot to keep hand there replace compressor start components listed above. Sometimes the run capacitor is not needed changed but will either changed or have someone do a capacitance test to determine if needed. If helpful please rate, Thanks Sea Breeze

Hello, here is a link for parts for your ac http://www.appliancefactoryparts.com/aircleaners/climatrol/m6y12f2aay.html yes is sounds like either a bad capacitor or bad temp control switch. If you have a multimeter you can check if tje capacitor is bad by first discharging it with a insulated screwdriver ( put screwdriver across capacitor terminals ) tjen set the meter to microfarad range, if the microfarad number is lower than whats printed on the of the capacitor replace.

I just answered this question for another person so rather than write the whole thing again I am pasting this in here. I don't know what brand you have but the advice is the same, just use a manufacturers warrantee company if it is under 5 years. Sounds like a bad overload relay capacitor on your compressor, or a bad compressor. If it is under 5 years you usually have a 5 year sealed system warrantee that pays for parts and labor on the compressor. It does not pay for a relay overload capacitor. The problem is some warrantee companies will void your warrantee if you or an unauthorized servicer works on your unit. I would recommend you have maytag send out a technician to diagnose this, mainly because I have seen a lot of bad Maytag compressors lately. If it is over 5 years old you can replace the overload relay capacitor and test to see if it works. Before you do this you should remove the old overload relay capacitor from the compressor and do a continuity test between all three terminals and between the terminals and the compressor case. You should have continuilty between the terminals but not between the terminal and the case. If you dont have continuity between the terminals or if you do have continuity between a terminal and the case, then you have a bad compressor. Do not install the new overload relay capacitor as you cannot return these to the parts house once they have been installed. Even after all the tests and even if your compressor starts up you can still have a compressor failure within a couple of days. A technician can hook up your compressor to a tester and determine if it is good or bad. If a compressor is bad it usually costs 900 to 1100.00 to replace through any of the service companies in my area. Not worth repairing. Hope this helps, Appliance Specialists

Smoke from compressor

That is your start relay. Some of the Whirlpools and Maytags use a relay that can burn up like you mentioned. Buy a new start relay and replace that old one.

I trun my ac on to cool wait for some time and get nothing

The compressor is probably not running.
The Main reasons that this will happen
1 - A bad run capacitor (silver or metal capacitor)
It’s either shorted, grounded or open.
If it’s shorted a lot of times it will bulge out, (sometimes slightly)
2 - A bad start kit ( plastic capacitor and Relay connected to it )
The capacitor is either shorted or open
The relay either has an open coil between terminals #1 and #5
Or the relay is stuck.
Any time you change the capacitor or relay you should change
the other, especially if they are over a year old.
3 - A loose, burnt or disconnected wire
4 - Wired wrong
5 Compressor is open (windings burnt open)
6 Low on charge not getting enough cooling back to compressor, (Feel top of compressor to see if it’s hot it shouldn‘t be)
7 Some compressors have a black plastic overload under the compressor cap which could be bad.

Compressor

You need to put a new run capacitor on the compressor. My dad was given one the other day by someone who couldn't get it working either. They were going to throw it away thinking the compressor was bad but it was just the capacitor bad.
From the posts I see on here looks like Maytag had a bad batch of capacitors.Hope this helps you.

Dehumidifier tripping the breaker

be very careful - with the unit unplugged - try shorting the capacitor with an insulated screwdriver. if you get a healthy spark - the cap is probably ok. if you don't replace the cap. the cap is used in the motor's start winding.
