How to wire a jenn air cooktop JEC9530ADB

I'm installing a JEC9530adb cooktop and I have four wires from the unit and only three wires that the electriction gave me to wire to. The wires he gave me were black, white and bare copper. Can you please help me determine what to do with the extra red wire coming from the cooktop.

Thanks,

Tim

The new cooktops and ovens now have a 4th wire used for separating the ground and neutral. some new homes and remodeled homes have a 4th wire run from the circuit panel to the unit.
you dont have this but it is ok to just hook up the white and green/ground wires together. then red to red and black to black. it will work properly and thats all you have to do.

    you will also need to go back to the electrician and ask if the wire is of heavy enough gauge to run your cook top. if he says its ok, then do this.

    top ----------------------- home
    black black
    red white
    green and white bare

    does that make sense? i hope so.
    but really you should have the right wire from the home so colors dont get messed up or hooked up wrong in the house panel.
    you need whats called a 3 wire with ground from the house panel. then colors will match.

Helping a friend install a new unit... he has 3 wires where we took out the old unit (the old unit had 4 wires) .. the (source) 3 wire is black, white & bare.... the old and new unit have black, red,...

Hello,

I suspect on teh wiring from the house the black&white will be the hot wires and the bare will be ground/neutral

use a volt meter before connecting tonew cooktop and check for;
black/bare to have 120volts
white/bare to have 120volts

if that is what you find...connect new cooktop as such;

black to black
red to (house) white

(cooktop) white and green to bare

Which from the red or the black wire comeing from the stove, is the hot one

Since you have a red wire you must have 10-3 romex. 10-3 has four wires. Three jacketed wires Red, Black, White and a bare copper wire. The is Red and Black are your two 120 legs (both hot) white is neutral and the bare is ground.

How do you get the black top off. I have to put in a new front burner. Thanks.

I had the same problem. Mine was caused by liquid seeping into the infinite switch (the switch that gets rotated by the knob to set burner temperature). This caused one of the live wires to short to ground within the switch. Bad Design IMHO. Replacing the switch fixed the problem (you can get replacement parts at Searspartsdirect.com - search using the cooktop model number).
You first need to remove the unit from its installation. Start by disconnecting the exhaust fan from the ductwork. Then push the cooktop up.
To get at the switch you need to remove the top by taking off only the top row of screws all around the unit and also in the down draft cavity (the down draft cavity is where the grease guard mesh is)

Turn off the circuit breaker to the cooktop. Verify by making sure the burners/fan do not come on. Disconnect the exhaust fan (underneath the cooktop) from the ductwork by removing the tape that joins it. While you are underneath the cooktop, open the junction box. Label the four wires that are joined so that you will be able to connect them later. Then disconnect the four wires. Remove the metal sheating that connects to the junction box (there is a nut on the inside of the junction box that you loosen. Pull out all the supply wires (from the mains) from the junction box. Then push the cooktop up and out and lay it flat on a table with the flat side down.
Take off only the top row of screws all around the unit. Rotate the unit so that you can get to the down draft cavity (the down draft cavity is where the grease guard mesh is). Remove the two center screws. Then pull the black top off.

Whirlpool Electric Cooktop Wiring

sound like you have a three wire setup on you house most commonly the black wire is the L1 wire or one of the hot wires and the red is the L2 wire and is also one of the hot wire in this instance your white wire would be your neutral/ground wire this would connect to the copper wire on your cook top depending on the model it would have a red wire a black wire and the copper wire but some may also have a white wire also if this is the case on a three wire setup you would attach the copper and white wires together also if needed you can goto the maufactures website and download an instalation guide.

Wiring installation

You do need a 208/240 volt supply from your service panel. The green is ground, white is nuetral, and the red and black should measure 120 volts each to ground or 240/208 between each other. It is normal for most breaker panels to supply 208/240 between adjacent insulators. If you are only getting 1/2 of that then the circuit breaker may not be straddling the insulator bar but be 1/2 notch out and both breaker pins contacting the same 110 supply.
