The LCD displays do not produce light, so to generate brightness, LCDs have a backlight. A backlight is a small flourescent lamp placed behind, above or to the side of the LCD display. The light from the lamp is what is spread across the screen. The typical LCD uses a cold cathode flourescent lamp as its backlight. They are generally 8 inches long and slimmer than a pencil. The flouresecent lamps require a fairly high-voltage, high-frequency energy. The component to supply this energy is the inverter. The inverter is a small circuit board (sorry I though there were two), installed behind the LCD panel and take AC power and converts (inverts) it for the backlight. If you are having problems with flickering screens are dimness, its more likely the inverter and not the backlight itself. Inverters store and convert energy, so they have the potential to discharge the energy which is dangerous. Hope this helps.

What I said was that the video connector size for the a105 was a different size than the a135, even though they are both 15.4" lcds widescreen glossy briteview. So that the a135 lcd when mounted in the a105 top cover: I cannot plug it into the board since the video connector from the a135 is a bit larger (the actual plug) than the a105 plug/motherboard size. SO I am thinking maybe change the video connector so it fits or this is not possible?

I don't know where this thread was originated, but your laptop has only one inverter board.

The inverter is a small board that powers the AC lamp that provides backlight to LCD.

Thanks to "taramarsh" for reply but meant to ask

If it doesn't have a built in switch, meaning a physical one, then you should try looking at the keyboard for an fn key and what Fx (x ie F1 etc.) Or if you don't have that too, you can opt to use windows key + "x"

My laptop is working fine, but part of the screen on the right side is black, like it's out. The whole screen went out before and had to replace some little thing,, (video inverter , maybe?) it's...

From your description they replaced the inverter board to fix the problem. When you had it repaired was the right side dark when you got it back? because if it was they are responsible for making right. If the problem was fixed, it still could be the inverter board or a bad back light that is going, if it is the back light most technicians will not attempt this repair because you have get in behind screen which is not meant to be taken apart. "a very tricky repair that requires solder work" They will usually opt to replace the complete LCD display to correct the problem.

It was working fine and then went off. It would not power up.We were traveling in the car using a Radio Shack inverter for powering the laptop. Any ideas?

If the computer overheated, it could have shut down. If the inverter broke, it could give invalid voltages overloading the computer and possibly shorting the motherboard. I would have a repair shop give you a estimate, it should be free. Then post a reply and i wiil walk you through a process to repair the computer (if applicable)

Monitor screen is very dim.

you must replace your lcd inverter, you can obtain one for around 5-15 usd, you will need to open your lcd bezel(plastics)this it a common problem in this model, its easy just be carefull with your lcd. The inverter it is located under lcd, you need to remove the frontal plastic, locate the inverter and replace it. The dark it is because your inverter no longer turn on your backlight(a lamp to give brightness to your lcd inside your lcd)
This could be a hard work if you didnt have the tools or experience.

If you wish we can replace your inverter for $49 usd

HP laptop screen

Hi, this problem is caused by either a bad inverter or a bad LCD back light. In my experience its usually the back light that is the issue but you should check the inverter with a multimeter first to make sure. Unfortunately, a back light on a LCD panel is not a meant to be a serviceable part, although it can be done (it involves dremeling and soldering), IMO its only worth a shot if you can't find an LCD panel for under $300. The good news is a quick ebay search shows that a compatible LCD screen for your model can be had for about $175 plus shipping.
Here is your models service manual (PDF) which explains how to take the laptop apart.
If you can't or don't want to do it yourself I am experienced in doing this type of repair. e-mail me jason(at)jrdtech(dot)net
