OK...so while I'm sure that hitting the power button w/ a mallet will work...I was having the same issue and felt uncomfortable hitting my very expensive Dyson w/ a mallet.
Here is what I did to fix the problem I have a DC17...I am sure instructions will vary by model Here is what you will need: 1. flat head screw driver 2. Torx -15 screw driver.
1. remove the dust tank  2.Pull the extension tube (handle) out (as if you were going to  vacuum a tight area.  3. there are 2 torx screws that you will have to remove 4. there are 4 retaining clips that you will use the flat head screw driver to unlatch.   5. After you remove the torx screws and release the 4 retaining clips, the front panel (that houses the power button) can be removed.  6. This will expose the actual power button itself.  Most likely it was jammed. 7. Once you think you have fixed it...test out your fix. 8.  If fixed...reassemble

Thanks! That was super helpful. I just fixed my DC40 thanks to you. BIG TIP: dont forget to UNPLUG the vaccuum before starting. Gave myself a good shock because I was fiddleing with the button circuit and forgot it was still plugged in from testing it. Once the compartment is open, the ON button circuit slides out (it has button on top and wires in the bottom). On the bottom of that was a silver pin that slipped out of the notches and thats why mine wouldnt stay on. Thanks!

Honestly, try hitting it on the top with a rubber mallet. The switch sometimes gets jammed. I use this repair all the time and never see a redo for them. Works on about 90% of the Dysons with that same issue.

SOURCE: I have a Dyson vacuum. The vacuum won't stay

My vacuum had this exact same problem, but was out of warranty because it was remanufactured. Thankfully, it's a very quick, five-minute fix.

  1. UNPLUG The Vacuum!
  2. Remove the cannister.
  3. Extend the handle and remove it.
  4. Remove the two torx (T-15) screws behind the power button, where the handle normally stows.
  5. There are four tabs holding the front plate containing the power button on; use your screwdriver to release them.
  6. Gently pull the front plate off.
  7. The switch on the right is the power button. Remove it, try clicking it a few times; if it sticks, great! Replace it and reassemble, otherwise you'll need to replace it.

Brush doesnt turn

Look for the reset button on the side of the brushbar housing - there should be a red sticker and a red button. Push it once. It's
not gonna stay depressed, it's gonna pop right out - that's normal.
- Step on the red pedal on the back
- Turn the machine on with the red power button
- Press the gray button next to the red power button - this is the ON/OFF switch for the brushbar - if it doesn't spin, press and hold the gray button down for 10 seconds
- If it still isn't spinning, remove the brushbar and make sure nothing is blocking it and withholding it from spinning

My dyson dc17 turn on but doesn't turn

Hi there,
I am sorry to hear you are having difficulty with your DC17. If the brush bar is not spinning it may be obstructed.
Please visit http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=956&product=DC17-ANIMAL for step by step instructions on how to inspect your brush bar and clear any obstructions that may be present.
Once you have carried out these steps you may need to reset your brush bar. To do this please plug your machine in, recline it as if you are preparing to vacuum a carpeted surface, turn your machine on and if the brush bar is not spinning push the silver button next to your power button one time. This should reset the brush and it should begin spinning immediately.
If you are still having difficulty with your machine please contact the Dyson US Helpline at 1-866-693-9766 or the Dyson UK Helpline at 0800 298 0298 so we can provide further assistance.
Best wishes,
Jessica

Dyson Animal on button wont stay on.

That's the problem with dyson. They work for the first few months then start to break down. Your switch might need replacing or your cord connection is lose and causing it to short out and turn off.
