SOURCE: My Badger 5 garbage disposal

I had this same problem after my wife tried to clean out a fish bowl (she said she skimed out all of the little pebbles). She still missed a lot of them and many ended up in the disposal. Anyways it made the same humming sound when turning it on. This humming noise means something is jamming it from spinning. The hum is just the sound of the motor trying to spin (DO NOT LEAVE IT HUMMING FOR A LONG TIME)

-If you have a lot of whatever's causing the jam still in there, I suggest you take out the disposal and flush as much as possible out with water (I had to do this to get majority of the rock pebbles out) while holding it upside down.

-Now you need a decent tool set, get a 3/8" ratchet, 7/16" deep socket, and a 3" extension.

-It's easiest if you put the disposal back in the sink to do this step as it may take some muscle and the sink will hold it in place.

-If you look down into the disposal from the top of the sink you should see a nut in the middle of the disposal (and the 2 silver spinning teeth on the sides).

-The nut in the middle is what you need to get the ratchet on.

-Now just muscle the ratchet clockwise for awhile then counter-clockwise for awhile and repeat if necessary until the rotor spins completely freely. When there is completely no reistance when turning it you are done.

-Pull the ratchet out and try turning on the disposal. If you did the above step correctly then if should turn on like normal.

Congratulations you just saved yourself from calling a plumber!!

My Badger 5 is just humming and I smell a bad burning smell.

Either the Shredding Plate or the motor has burned out. In your case, it sounds like the latter. The motor is not repairable, you have to buy a new unit complete.

Disposal made loud grinding sound, immediately turned off. Could not find anything jammed in disposal. But now it just makes a humming sound

There is something binding up the garbage disposal. Make sure the power switch is off and trip the breaker for that circuit too! Use a broom handle, plunger handle or something similar and use it to try and turn the inside of the disposal. By prying between the sink opening and any raised surface on the bottom of the inside of the disposal with the broom handle you may be able to break it free. This sometimes takes considerable force so be careful not to smack yourself if the broom handle slips. It may take several attempts. Once you can get the disposal to turn, check inside for any debris that may have been forced back into the disposal and remove it before restoring power and testing the disposal is functioning properly. Repeat the process if it begins working normally and suddenly binds up again. There may be additonal debris in the unit.

My garbage disposal jammed, (Badger. 5) I noticed this when I turned on the until and just heard a hum but nothing spinning. I shut off the unit and got out my allen wrench and inserted in the bottom and...

Just put a wooden broom stick into garbage disposal.
Wedge the broomstick against the cutter disk.
And push or pull broom stick against sink opening so it frees the cutter disk.

My bager 5 seems locked up when you hit the switch it hums how do I get it unlocked.

One day years ago, our new garbage disposal got stuck, and started humming instead of grinding. My mom turned off the switch, then she grabbed a wood-handled broom and stuck it down in the disposal. I was wondering, what's that lady doing.

She took the wood handled broom and placed it on the disposal cutter wheel that was stuck. Then she wedged the broom against the sink opening, She pushed the cutter wheel forward until it was free. Then she showed me that the cutter wheel is supposed to spin freely even when the switch is off.

That's how I learned to un-stick a garbage disposal.

The reset button seems to be stuck on my badger 5 disposal. how do I fix it

Does your garbage disposal cutter wheel rotate freely
Get a wood stick or broom handle and put it inside garbage disposal
Use broom handle to rotate cutter wheel
If wheel is stuck, wedge broom handle against side of sink opening and use it to push the wheel free
Once wheel is free, try reset again

If wheel rotates freely, try resetting with power off
Turn off circuit breaker to make sure power is really off and switch isn't bad
Try reset again.

If reset will not click in with power off, then there is a short inside disposal, and disposal is bad

One last thing ... the reset may be bad.
You might open wiring cover and see if reset wires are visible and see if you can by-pass reset wires .... but if there is a short, then bypassing reset could be a serious fire or electrocution hazard.

Replacing unit
Insinkerator-brand disposals used to snap into the same sink strainer so all you had to do was disconnect old one and reconnect new one without removing sink strainer. Then buy a can of 'rectoseal' from the plumbing department. Clean off tubular drain pipes and washers. Re-assemble tubular pipe joints and brush gooey rectoseal on the washers when re-assembling so there is no leak.

The badger might have same easy replacement

InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal: It hums but doesn't work. The wrench moves freely ...

If the blades move freely with the wrench and stick and motor hums then it sounds like it is time to replace the unit. Have you tried the reset switch? If it is humming than it is probably not tripped but worth a try. Hope this helps.
