Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

Dell Inspiron 6400 doesn't boot up properly, and won't turn off.

Hello

My Dell Inspiron 6400 is giving me trouble. At first it was booting up properly. It would allow me access to my profile but once there, none of my usual pop-ups appear. Although the mouse will move, when I go to the Start bar the eggtimer appears, and when I go to click on other icons the eggtimer does not appear but nothing happens. Then I tried rebooting a few times, but the computer would not allow me access to my profile once I clicked on it. It just froze halfway through loading. Now I cannot turn my computer off. I have tried holding down the power button for five seconds but it doesn't work. I am worried about taking out the battery completely. Please, do you have any advice for me? I am really worried.

Thanks

Try holding down Cntrl-Alt-Delete If that dosen't do it, and it's locked up, you should be able to pull the battery with minimal if any risk Profile settings must be set in administrator mode. Try booting in safe mode

Before you use the Recovery CD you need to backup your data because to restoring your laptop will wipe your data off the hard disk.
To backup your data when you cannot boot up your laptop, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Connect this hard drive/USB adapter into the USB port of a working computer. The computer will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and backup your data.
You can then fit the hard drive back into the Dell laptop and boot up with the Dell recovery CD to reinstall Windows etc.

The hard drive has failed, or windows 7 is not compatable with the laptop. Try installing vista, if this works! there is a problem with windows 7, no change! have the hardware checked for possible replacement.

I wonder if you have a keyboard issue. Most times the constant beeping means the keyboard is bad, but it doesn't normally boot or revert back to 5 or 4 beeps.

Have you tried resetting the BIOS defaults? In doing so, it will force IDE re-detection and often resolve vague boot issues.

Force off by pressing the power button for 10 seconds or more. Boot into safe mode, type msconfig in the run line, disable everything that starts. Restart normally, re-enable each program untill you find the one giving trouble.

How do you reformat the hard drive on a dell inspiron 6400 with vista

Asuming you have the Vista DVD and the correct installation key... Put the DVD into the machine and restart or turn the machine on. It should try to boot fro the DVD drive. If it does not then you will have to go into the BIOS and set the boot order to DVD drive 1st.

There also may be a chance it is booting to a menu that asks you what you want to boot to. Choose DVD drive.
