Had a large load of towels going and machine made an unusual sound. Machine will not agitate or spin now just hear the motor running. I took all towels out to see if it would run without anything in it but water, but still no movement.

Re: Whirlpool Washer stopped agitating and spinning
The most common problem after a large load is the motor coupling has broke. it is what connects the motor to the transmission. it is not hard to replace if you can get the cabinet off the unit. you have to take the control panel loose and "hinge" it back to get access to the clips that hold the cabinet on to the frame. once you remove the cabinet, then take off the pump clips, the motor clips and then the motor. that will allow you to get to the coupling and replace with a new one. sounds easy but its not for a first timer. good luck and hope you can find this of some help.

When you put the motor in did you replace the coupler between the motor and transmission? When fixing the agitator you need to get the agitator repair kit, It has seals, dogs, thrust plate, cam bearing and seals. The upper agitator is supposed to move only in one direction to get the clothes to move down towards the agitator. Do not overload machine. I have one of these and after 12 years I finally had to install this upper repair kit because the upper agitator quit moving. You may have an agitate cam that is going bad inside the transmission
Thats very agitating. There is a motor that runs the agitater, its either going out or you have lost the drive,a little spendy to have fixed.

unless your washer is over 20 years old, then it wont have a belt. the temperature of the water wont have anything to do with it spinning or not. need to know if it agitates or drains and just wont spin. if it agitates but no spin or drain, then you have a bad lid switch. if it wont agitate or spin, but will drain, then you have a broken drive coupling.
