Question about Tomtom One XL GPS Receiver

TomTom GPS actual position does not line up on the map

Hi there,

All North, South roads appear to be out by about 230 meters from the position on the GPS. When my vehicle is on a major highway, the GPS shows me 230 meters west of the highway - often where there is no road. As a result it gives me all kinds of erroneous directions as it is miscalculating where I am. I have the most up to date maps and have tried resetting the unit. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

    Thanks for your response.

It appears to be everwhere. We drove around the town we live in and the position was constantly out by about 2 blocks. We also took a drive down one of our major highways and while we were travelling east west the position appeared perfectly with the vehicle indicator in the middle of the road, but as soon as the road turned North we ended up about 230 meters off of the road.

    I am currently at N52.35600, W114.90582.

My GPS is showing 350 meters west of the highway but we are actually 120 meters west.

I am having the same problem. When my vehicle is on a any highway, the GPS
shows me about 2 to 3 blocks away.
I am also getting the same erroneous directions calculating where I am. I too have the most up to date maps.

This may not be the answer you are looking for but here goes.

#1 Is this occurring in one area all the time or randomly?

#2 how far are you traveling when ou notice these type of problems is it just a few miles or have you made a large trip.

if this is in a small area and does deviate all the time in the same area I would expec that this is a map issue.

I see that you did mention that you have the most upto date map possible that would be version 8.15

Just remember the map information in your gps is only as good as the map that is in there and it may not be accurate.

With all that said if you could post back the latitude and longitude of where you are discussing i maybe able to check for you if mine is done the same way.

My daughter has givem one TOMTOM to me. I would like to put on it The Brazilien maps. How can I do it? Paulo Freire

If you click on the link below, you will be taken directly to the Tom Tom Site for the purchase of Brazilian Maps. I do recommend that you review the Device in Question # 1 (Select your device) to insure the correct model is selected. You should be able to obtain the model number off of the rear of the GPS unit.

http://www.tomtom.com/en_us/shop/maps/#deviceSelected=GO%20Classic&mapSelected=Brazil

The two questions you need to answer on the above page

1. Select your device.

Here you would select the exact model of TomTom Go GPS.

2 Which map would you like?

Select Brazil under "North, South & Central America"

That is it, the price is for the Brazil Map $ 69.95.

Was going north and the map said i was going south

Are you sure you were heading north at that particular time?
Gps show your direction at that moment and time. Just because your road is going north does not mean that the road is always going north, sometimes they change directions to go around obstacles that were in the way of the road design, IE mountain, town, river.
The sign for the highway may say your are heading north when in actuality you are heading south to go around something.

The gps will not take into consideration the curve of the road, it just tells you the direction you are heading. Hope this helps.

Just purchased TomTom XXL states that this device contains newest maps. Unfortunately it is not so. For example a roundabout in the vicinity of Empuriabrava, Spain, which exists more than three years is...

I Hate to tell you this but i have said this before and posted this before for people. Newest maps available mean just that. The problem is in the company that goes out and actually maps these roads, passages and speed limits.Tom Tom does NOT go out and map these roads and places, they buy the maps from another company (here in north America it is either Tele-Atlas or maybe Nav_tech, think there might be one other one) that company is responsible for map updates and other things, all TOM TOM does is put there version of How do i get from here to here on it and ship it out using the most recent maps that are available from whom ever they purchase the actual maps from.Hope this helps.

MY GARMIN NUVI 760 says north on a road when it should show south

Sounds like the map needs an update if it doesn't show roads that actually exist.

I can send you a powerpoint presentation that explains it in a little more detail. To really learn how to read latitude and longitude you should pick up a copy of “Chapman’s Piloting and Seamanship.”

The earth is divided into parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude, also known as lines of position.

clip_image002.jpg

Latitude is measured north and south of the equator, with the equator represented as 0 degrees, and the poles being represented as 90 degrees North or South. Latitude lines are paralel to the equator. For example, if I was at the equator I would be at 0 degrees. If I traveled exactly 60 nautical miles to the north, I would be at 1 degree North, and if I traveled another 60 miles I would be at 2 degrees north. Your GPS display will preface the Latitude measurement with an “N” for positions North of the equator and an “S” for positions south of the equator.

Longitude measures your position east or west from the Prime Meridian, which is a line represented as 0 degrees that bisects the earth from north to south and passes through Greenwich England. Halfway around the earth at the International Dateline Longitude is 180 degrees. Measuring Longitude is a little more complicated because the lines are not parallel and requires an accurate clock (your GPS) to compare time at your location relative to the time in Greenwich England. Your GPS display will preface the Longitude measurement with a “W” for positions west of Greenwich and an “E” for positions east of Greenwich.

To make more accurate measurements each degree is divided into 60 minutes. Because the lines are parallel, 1 minute of latitude is equal to 1 nautical mile. Each minute can be further divided into 60 seconds. Each second is roughly equivalent to a distance of 100’ Instead of seconds, the default setting on your Garmin breaks the minute down into tenths, hundredths, and thousandths for meven more precise measurements. Because they are not parallel, lines of Longitude are measured the same way, but the distances vary depending on how far north or south of the equator.

To find out where you are with a GPS, you need a map that shows lines of latitude and longitude on it. The lines will be labeled on the map or along the borders of the map. Most nautical charts show the latitude measurements along the right the left border of the map. Longitude measuremnts will be shown along the top and bottom edges.

GPS Taking to teh Wrong Direction

If maps get outdated enough, any device can go awry. Keeping your maps updated should keep it working fine. TomTom has Tele Atlas map updates at their map store here: http://www.tomtom.com/products/maps/select.php

If your maps are in fact updated and you're still having difficulty, it might be time for an upgrade

How do you load maps? and are these Garmin maps. I try to keep the Zumo original and use an SD card for extra maps. Did you try this yet? And if you are using SD cards, try a different brand/quality. I had some lockups with crappy budget cards. Kingston, Sandisk and some other A brands work fine!
