It depends if you formatted the hard drive you would probably... if you didn't you are lucky because you can probably find most of your old files under C:\documents and settings

if you did indeed format your hard drive, you may have to spend hundreds if not thousands on data recovery, im sorry that as far as that goes im not sure what company or service can guarantee your files back, i don't know which to refer you to.

Good luck!

i wouldn't personally recoomend either of those programs, i would use Kaspersky, or AVG Internet Security. To use the files/folder you find in document and settings simply (and very carefully) copy and paste it to wherever suits you best, preferably best onto a backup dvd. The folder might have security restrictions so if thats the case you may want to watch this video to clear up any File Permissions. You will have to take ownership of the foler.

keep trend micro rather that windows livecare one, and also, move your old user account to your new one by cutting and pasting to your new documents folder

How to reinstall windows xp thinkpad x41

How to Reload Windows XP Without Removing Files Deleting system files, modifying the registry and installing incompatible drivers to Windows XP can damage the integrity of the operating system, rendering it inoperable. Virus infections are often responsible for making the aforementioned changes to a system, but employees who have administrative access to the workstation can make deleterious modifications to the OS as well. Reinstalling Windows XP can repair the OS, but if work-related files are stored to the system partition, all of the data will be erased during the installation process. To reload Windows XP without losing files, you can perform an in-place upgrade, also known as a repair installation.

Step 1
Insert the Windows XP CD into the optical drive and then press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to restart the computer. Step 2Press any key when prompted to load the contents of the disc. Press "Enter" on the Welcome to Setup screen.
Step 3 Read the license agreement, pressing "PgDn" to scroll down the page. Press "F8" to agree to the terms. The CD will search for previous installations of Windows XP. Step 4
Press "R" to repair the selected operating system. The disc will begin reinstalling the operating system to the hard drive without affecting personal files. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the repair installation. Step 5
Log in to Windows XP and sign on to the Internet when installation completes. Click "Start," "All Programs" and then "Windows Update." Step 6
Click "Scan for Updates" to search for applicable service packs and hotfixes to reinstall to the OS. Step 7
Click "Install Now" to bring the in-place upgrade up-to-date.
Things Needed
  • Windows XP CD

Tip
  • Make sure you have your Windows XP product key (found on the CD cover or on the computer case) available prior to reinstallation.

Warnings
  • If possible, back up your files previous to the installation in case something goes awry during the process.
  • You will need to reinstall all non-native programs and removable devices after performing an in-place upgrade.

I Cannot use my laptop touch pad,and maybe there is a virus because my OS is not function. thank you!!! God Bless

The Laptop touch pad will have to be addressed after the OS problem has been solved.

XP may have losted files due to a virus of other problems, like the replacement by other software.

Insert the orginal CD and turn on your computer. Windows will run through its tests. Watch the screen because it will guide you to either "reinstall" the OS or just install what the setup has found to either be missing and reinstall those files or replace any corrupt files. If you have been working with this OS for, say a year or two, you may want to consider reinstalling the OS. You will have to reinstall your other software that you have installed since you started but sometimes that is the correct solution, not neccessay the one that you will like.

Good luck!

Here is a link I found. The software can be loaded fro there. The guy says the ISO files work best, but I couldn't access them. I used the zip file and it worked great. After downloading it simply right click on it and click on extract all and it will open. Here is the website I used:

Can i undo a reinstall ??

Unfortunately no, however that doesn't necessarily mean that you're completely out of luck, if you're looking to retrieve lost data. Depending on the method that you used to reinstall, you can try looking through your hard drive to see if any remnant files were left behind. If not, then what you may have to loo into is Advanced Data Recovery services, in order to try and retrieve any important data that you haven't had a chance to back up yet. Be forewarned that this will usually be costly, but worth it, if the files are that important to you.

Sound card

Dear Loreerupe,

This sounds like a corrupted software file. Please use your installation disk and reinstall the sound driver file. This will overwrite the corrupted files and upon the machine rebooting you will have gained sound operation again.

Unfortunately you dont state the model/maker/windows operating system and cannot help any further with instructions/manuals/driver files.

I hope you can fix this,
Regards
Please dont forget to rate this solution if you found it usefull.
