Question about HP LightScribe dvd640i (DVD640I) DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner

1 Answer

LightScribe installed properly, but not seen by other software.

This LightScribe burner is OEM and came with the prepackaged HP computer (Pavilion a1130n). The hp website does not have any new firmware or updates for this item. The drive itself reads and writes CDs and DVD perfectly.

The LightScribe Control Panel shows that the "hp DVD640c" Lightscribe burner is active and installed.

I have installed all of the software, control panels, and updates from http://www.lightscribe.com/index.aspx

I have properly inserted new lightscribe disks into the driver too, and if I didn't, the software will remind me. (The reminder doesn't happen, because the software doesn't know that lightscribe exists).

However, SureThing software does not list the "hp DVD640c" as a possible printer. As a matter of fact NERO lightscribe labeler doesn't see it either.

This is the second time I have come across this on 2 different computers (which happen to have MS Office 2003 installed with thier "Image Writers" listed in the print options). My own computer has no problem with LightScribe (and no Office 2003), and I have tried these other burners on mine and had no problem burning labels with them.

[EDITED] - I also loaded the LightScribe Diagnostic utility, and it shows a lightscribe driver installed and working correctly, and it DID dectect writable lightscribe disk inserted into the driver.

I have WindowXP fresh copy installed yesturday with all of the recent updates, including xp SPK3 , and I wonder if this "printer driver" is being ignored by some other software driver.

I uninstalled the lightscribe driver from the the Device Manager and rebooted Windows XP, and still no fix.

Any help is appreciated.

Software problem with NERO and Surething LightScribe. Didn't see the "LightScribe' option in thier software.

Droppix Lightscribe software worked fine.

My computer does not recognize my hp 557s as a lightscribe compatible device

Hi professa31!
Have you tried installing the Lightscribe software bundle? Their website says that it's required for operation of any lightscribe device. Here's the link: http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadsection/windows/index.aspx?id=810
Also, it appears that there are a bunch of reasons why it may not be detected, most of which are not bad at all. Here (http://www.lightscribe.com/support/index.aspx?id=401) is a list of a few reasons, from the lightscribe website.
Good luck!

Had to roll back my computer now i cant find the install disc for my hp 940d dvd need the nero and light scribe disc any info would help

If the DVD-writer was factory-installed, then you can contact HP, and order a replacement CD that will contain the NERO and LightScribe software.
Cost will be under $20 for the CD, and about $20 for courier-delivery.

Or, instead of NERO, access http://www.MajorGeeks.com
and download "Ashampoo Burning Edition 6". It is _free_ software.
Version 9 of the software is better, but it's not free.

I don't have any substitutes for the LightScribe software.

My dv9000 wont burn any cds. i am not sure why. i have tryed downloading some different software but it still wont do it. i know it can i have done it before. i also have lightscribe and i have used that...

1. Lightscribe needs its own drivers and a labeler like Surething CD Labeler

http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadSection/windows/index.aspx

2. If your HP came with sonic and you installed Nero or something else there is a good chance neither programs will work.

I had the same issues with my lightscribes (2) I thoughtlessly installed Nero without removing the Sonic Digital Media + in my HP the burner no longer worked, I reinstalled both programs after removal. I had to run the Nero Clean Tool first

http://www.nero.com/eng/support-nero7-tools-utilities.html

before the burner would work again.... only with the Sonic though Nero never did anything but mess up my burner, the lightscribe came back after installing the correct drivers, if your lightscribe is very light almost unseeable, then there is a contrast enhancer for the lightscribe

Lightscribe CD Burner

try and reinstall the sonic program if you have it. it sounds like the computer did not have the sonic software on it when you bought it, so it would have been removed when you restored your computer.
