You will need to fix the master boot record with the Windows XP Recovery Console. To do this, you will need a Windows XP install CD.

Here are the steps to use the recovery console:

To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
  2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
  3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
  4. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  5. At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your Windows XP installation.

In this instance, the correct commands are:

c:\fixmbr
c:\fixboot
The type exit after finishing then remove the Original OS CD.
The machine will reboot properly.

This will fix your boot sector

And All should be well

HDD Locked due to Brontok Virus

Download a copy of the AVG Rescue CD (ISO image file or USB image) and burn this to a blank CD (or USB stick) then use this to boot the computer with the virus.

Run the AVG virus scanner and let it remove all detected virus activity.

Dual Boot Xp & windows 7

First you have to create partition. You need at least two partition. One in which you intall Xp and other for win 7. WARNIG BACK UP YOUR DATA BEFORE THIS.*(You can create partion by any hard drive manager you can make a hard drive partition in control panel>administrative tool>create & manage hard drive partition)
Now install xp first in one partition. If you have pre installed then avoid this step.
Now install Win 7 in another partition.
After you restart the machine will ask to chose your os. & just select the required OS.

If any problem appears then just put win XP disk & repair it.

You cant install win Xp after windows 7.
You have to format win 7 before installing Xp.
Commiting any of trick or Tweak you need to backup your data in another HD partition

Please help me in downloading this antivirus,i tried but couldnt. please give an easier description of downloading this file.

The easiest way to maintain your computer without intrusive antivirus programs is using the Microsoft Security Essentials which comes free it covers antivirus as well as ad ware and spyware. Does and regular scan of any software or file changes that may occur while on line. You can download this software here. I have not received any problems using this software.
Now if you wish to continue with the software you want to download. Just go and click on their download link and follow the directions. If you download the software of your choice since you did not describe the software you want to us. Be sure to delete any of the download from that software so it does not conflict just go to control panel and click on add and remove programs. Then download the MSE software from the here link above. Please comment for me to know if this assisted you. Thanks for using FixYa! John

I did fresh formatting but i still have viruses on my pc

The virus could be a partition virus. Did you delete the existing partition and then format? If not then, I would suggest, you to do it first.

It is also likely that any of the CD's that you are using for installing software's might be infected by the Virus.

Therefore, first Delete the existing partition, then create new partition, then install XP and after than Install a good AntiVirus software.

There is also another easy way out, if you are able to get the name of the Virus, I could suggest the AntiVirus that can remove the virus without having to format it. But this is only if the virus is not a Partition Virus.

Odd GUI Problems

I recommend Ubuntu it's smart fast and the virus won't run on it! you could install it in a second partition on the hard drive (minimum space is 4 GB recommended is 8 G) or you can run it "live" using the CD. If you install it in a separate partition you can still use the computer and access your files from windows! I recommend you try it and install "clamtk" from Synaptic Package Manager. It is a virus scanner that detects Windows AND Linux viruses! It's also FREE! Who knows, you might just like Ubuntu too!

How do i remove a virus from my computer?

You need to get a good anti virus program and install it on your computer.
it will scan initially, which will check the boot partition and main windows files.
then once the program is installed run a full scan on your computer.
I use Panda Anti Virus, http://www.pandasoftware.com

you can get a free version of AVG anti virus at the link below.
http://www.avg.com/download-trial

You will find if you think you have one virus, you may have a huge amount of spyware or virus in your computer. Don't wait, get a good antivirus now.

HDD Reformatting

why not reinstall sp3 again for windows xp if it freezes then it might be looking for files that don't exist anymore. If the virus attatched itself to your files they may have been removed when you ran your virus software. you don't need to format to reload windows. Just simply do a clean reinstall on C drive.
