you have to get it fixed. same thing happened to my onkyo reciever and they said it was a bad circuit. had to take it to an onkyo tech and have it replaced.
SOURCE: Onkyo digital reciever has poping noise when in dolby sound
I have the same reciever, and had the same problem. Contact Onkyo, this is a known issue where defective DSP chips were used and manifest problems with a popping / clicking sound when using surround settings. These receivers also have a Dolby Digital input issue that can cause audio dropouts when watching cable or SAT broadcasts that encode DD using a 'newer' broadcast encoding methods. Onkyo is covering the cost of that repair for me now, even though the receiver is 5 years old now....
SOURCE: Power will not stay on
Activated protection circuitry means that the amplifier is seeing conditions it does not like and is shutting down the power to prevent further damage.
Either you have a short in your speaker wires, in your speakers, or a blown amplifier.
Disconnect both speakers and turn on the amplifier. Does it still give the error message? If it does, your amp is blown. If it does not, carefully inspect your speaker wires and their connection. Make sure all looks good and reconnect the speakers and try it again. Still get the error message? You likely have a problem in your speaker cabinet(s).

I had the same problem with my xbox 360. I was able to fix the problem by disabling the Display Discovery setting on the xbox.
