we have already tried this but even with the windows disk in it does not respond. it just gives us the same thing.

  • hillary_994 Dec 28, 2008

The problem was not using disks, the problem is that we cannot even get the computer working. when we turn it on it does not let us past the black screen saying that there is a disk read error.

  • hillary_994 Dec 28, 2008

it does not acknowledge that i have a disk in the drive, it does not come up. it just keeps a blank screen.

Try running chkdsk /r Follow the steps. See if you are able to recover bad sectors using windows inbuilt command.

1. Click Start > Run. 2 In the Run box, type the following text: cmd 3 Click OK. 4 At the command prompt, type the drive letter of the drive you want to check (followed by a colon), and then press Enter. For example, to check drive D, type the following text: d: 5 Change to the root directory of the drive by typing the following text and pressing Enter: cd\ 6 Type the following text, and then press Enter: chkdsk /<switch> where <switch> is one of the following:

  • If you want to automatically repair file system errors, use the /f switch (for example, chkdsk /f).
  • If you want to both repair file system errors and scan for and recover bad sectors, use the /r switch (for example, chkdsk /r).
If you do not specify a switch when running CHKDSK, any errors that are found will not be fixed. 7 If you are prompted to schedule CHKDSK to run the next time the computer restarts (because CHKDSK may be unable to gain exclusive access to the drive under Windows), type the following text, and then press Enter: y 8 At the command prompt, type the following text, and then press Enter: exit 9 If you had to schedule the CHKDSK operation, then restart Windows NT/2000/XP. While Windows is loading, CHKDSK should automatically run and check the drive that you specified earlier.

Tap F5 to get into safe mode. Once there type msconfig in the run box and uncheck everything under startup. Once you have done that restart and if it boots up we know that it is something hardware causing problem.

1) This problem can appear if your hard drive has failed,

2) but it can also appear if the Boot sector of the hard drive is damaged in some way.

To replace damaged ntldr and ntdetect.com you can copy fresh files from the XP CD using the COPY command. Boot with the XP CD and enter the Recovery Console (as above). At the Command Prompt type the following (where "X" is your CD-Rom drive letter) allowing the files to overwrite the old files
COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C:
COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:

To repair a damaged Boot Sector at the command prompt type FIXBOOT and press Enter. Then answer "Y"

there is definetly a problem with your hard drive either the way it is set up or it is damaged and needs replaced.

do you have a copy of a windows disc you own or can borrow to make this repair you will not need to re-install windows you will just need 2 files from it

you will need the windows install disc to allow you into the area that i have described above.

Are you having problems getting the computer to recognize a windows disc "CD"

This can be resolved by changing the boot order temporarily under the bios.

once you have a windows disc that you are able to use i can go into more details

Hi,
initially try to unplug the battery and ac power for 5 minutes, plug in both and start up again do you receave the error are you able to use the computer?
if you are unable to use the computer I would suggest you get your hands on a windows installation cd of the verion currently installed? Xp home  /  pro or Vista.
with the cd / dvd you can perform a repair installation that should fix the issues.

your computer is not starting from the disk you will need to look at the computer screen when you press the power button look on the sides and see if anywhere it says : press button to enter boot menu, f12 for example so press f12 in start up to get into the boot menu, select the cd drive from the list and enter.

of you can't get the boot menu to open you will need to enter the setup / bios / cmos settings and change the boot order so the computer starts from the cd first.

here is a guide on bios settings and how to change the boot order it may be diffrent on your laptop

Blue Screen doesn't load Operating System. I beleive there is a software conflict when my daughter downloaded an application she needed for university

If you are getting 'Uncorrectable data Error or Media' for your internal hard drive then it is likely that you have a disk problem rather than a software conflict caused by anything your daughter downloaded.
If the Dell diagnostics provide no solution, then you would need to use a specialist boot CD to try to repair the disk errors. One such disk is Hiren's Boot CD which can be downloaded as a CD image file (.ISO) from http://www.hirensbootcd.org/ then would need to be burnt on to a blank CD then the laptop booted from this CD.
On the initial Hiren's boot menu, select DOS programs, then select Disk tools before selecting HDAT2 to perform the disk repair actions.
HDAT2 can take some time to complete depending on the size of your internal disk drive and the number of bad sectors or other errors encountered - the tool will attempt to repair bad sectors by reading, verifying, writing and re-reading / verifying the data.
If the disk can be recovered, then you may be lucky and the system will be able to boot but otherwise, you may still need to do some further recovery work for the operating system, in which case you may need your Windows install or recovery CD media.

Hello. Completely out of the blue, when I turned my laptop on it immediately went to a black screen that said "A disk read error occurred press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." But when I do it takes me...

When your system boots it looks for a startup file which is located on your hard drive to load your operating system. If your system doesn't find your hard drive it would post a disk read error message.
To be sure your HDD is detected by your system, you can go to your BIOS setting by pressing DEL or F1 or F2 or F12 it depends on your BIOS maker then try to see on your BIOS setting configuration if your HDD drive is detected or not.

Sometimes and always happens that we forget a media disc on our optical drive and since the default first boot device is the optical drive the system looks for a startup file on it and post a disk read error. So check if you leave any disc on your optical drive and remove it.

It is very safe to configure your BIOS setting to set the HDD as the first boot device in case we leave something on our optical drive most of the time.

Hope this helps.

Old machine, trying to rehab for daughter. Turn on, seet Toshiba screen, then see "Disk read error, cntrl+alt+del to reboot"

You have one of two problems. Either your operating system crashed and you will need to get windows reinstalled on the computer or your hard drive crashed.
If the hard drive crashed you will need to replace the hard drive first and then also reinstall windows.
In both cases it is needed to reinstall windows.
This is probably something a computer technician should take care of.

Disk Error read

This error means there is probably something wrong with the drive itself. I would reccomend having the hard drive replaced. Was the computer new or used?

System disc error Compaq Pesario 1275

This is either an issue with the CMOS batter which may need to be changed, I have seen this error on thinkpads and one way of resolving it is to install an older BIOS, you can download a BIOS from your machine and install it using there instructions

Hope this helps

Laptop froze so restarted it.

Hi,
thankyou for your request.
it,s not necessarily the CD Disk, that it,s refering to. it may be the hard-disk.
if your having to leave the windows cd in the drive, then your hard-drive ( Disk ) may be lacking a few files on it, and reading from the cd for the missing files.
what you need to do, is format the hard-drive, then go through the re-installation of windows. when you,ve done that. ensure that all of your decive drivers are installed correctly.
if you go to My Computer/control Panel/ system/Device manager Any devices not correctly installed, usually have a yellow exclamation mark by them.

if this solves your problems, please rate as fixya.

if your still having problems, please post a reply here.

many thanks Mike @ compurepair.
