Okay, easiest first. In Safe Mode, your sound won't work. Safe Mode means only enough drivers to make your PC more than a doorstop get loaded, so that's okay.

Second, if it boots to Safe Mode without difficulty, try running System Restore in System Tools. Go back to some date before when your issue started. That should get you going. Don't worry, your data files will not be affected in System Restore. I hope this helps.

Okay, you don't say if you might have gotten dinged by some malware, so try

    (a) booting to "Safe Mode with Networking"

    (b) log in as Administrator

    (c) go on the web to http://www.bitdefender.com or http://www.trendmicro.com and try the online virus/malware scans. They may find an issue or three that's gumming up the works.

    Post back how this went.

If you're running one of those online scanners like TrendMicro's HouseCall or BitDefender, you should be able to remove the malware. Just run the full scan and follow the wizards to remove the files. Post back how it went.

If you had no issue in safe mode the only thing I've seen like that is a virus that cuts of your use of I/O ports. boot into safe mode and try doing a system restore to a time before this problem occurred. IF that doesn't solve the problem try doing a clean install of the OS

Boot your PC with the windows OS disk and choose to repair your computer when asked. Run the chkdsk program in DOS on the recover mode to correct disk errors.
On completion, restart your computer normally and check it it works.

If it does not work, you may need to format your pc & reinstall windows again.

Failing to log in and freezing when when the windows xp starts to load

It mayt be infected with virus , if you have any virus scanner , go to safe mode by tapping f8 key when computer starts and run a deep scan i mean full scan , if still you face the same issue , go to normal mode and restore the computer using system restore to a date where your computer was working fine ,make sure programs installed after that date wil be gone however data saved on the hard drive would be safe .
so use it wisely .
directions to go to system restore
1. click on start
2. go to programs
3. then goto accessories
4. then system tools
5. select system restore .

Installed a rangeplus adapter on dell 1000 inspiron xp sp3 home

See if you can go into safe mode by hitting the F8 key right after the dell splash screen and right before the XP splash screen comes up. If you can get into safe mode try to uninstall the rangeplus adapter and try reinstalling again after rebooting the system normally.
