Odd shut down delay when power cord is attached

My Gateway mx6447 notebook takes forever to power down when my power cord is attached. It takes several minutes just for the shut down menu to appear, then an additional couple minutes to actually shut down. When not connected to power source, it goes quickly. I operate on XP. Any suggestions?

Yes, all programs were closed prior to shutting down. This problem occurs even when no programs were opened in a session.

Thanks, I have done that more than once but got no change in the situation.

Have you tried closing all the programs before you shut down the computer?

How about running defrag? do this by right clicking on your c:\ drive in my computer and selecting the tools tab. Then you will probably have to run scandisk first but this might help

If that didn't work you can try to go online and find a registry cleaner Like this one.

Computer runs off battery only not the power cord (battery is brand new)

You have a serious problem with the power and charging circuit. Normally if the battery is faulty the laptop can function with the power adapter plugged and running off the mains.
If a techo cannot fix without replacing the motherboard, then replacing the motherboard might not be a cost effective solution.

You salvage the hard drive by inserting it into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive.
Sorry about this, you have very few options.

No power

It might not be your power cord, then.. send your computer to a dealer to have it tested for circuit.
