My Gateway mx6447 notebook takes forever to power down when my power cord is attached. It takes several minutes just for the shut down menu to appear, then an additional couple minutes to actually shut down. When not connected to power source, it goes quickly. I operate on XP. Any suggestions?

Check the battery Check the power supply Check the fuse in plug. See if laptop is charging If all good then you should be able to start....ooops press the on button..sorry but sometimes the most obvious is the easiest to overlook.. If no life at all from laptop ie no beeps or other noises then your guess is good MOBO dead
usually you need to take out most of the screws you can seen, then pop off the faceplate above the keyboard. then take out the keyboard and then take out another set of screws and components, continue until you get to the power jack.
You have a serious problem with the power and charging circuit. Normally if the battery is faulty the laptop can function with the power adapter plugged and running off the mains.
If a techo cannot fix without replacing the motherboard, then replacing the motherboard might not be a cost effective solution.
You salvage the hard drive by inserting it into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive.
Sorry about this, you have very few options.
