Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Power? i own a gateway mx6450, the laptop fails to power up, and battery is damaged, i took it to a local repair shop, and was told it could be mother board issues. i refuse to believe it is main board as they could not get it to power up as well. i have also been made aware that the laptop will not power up without either a good battery in place, or one plugged into the laptop. is there a way to bypass battery, and just have the 6450 run solely off the charger for diagnostic purpose?? items that were checked and resolved to not be an issue on the laptop were: ac adapter plug in is intact and soldering not broken, and other then cosmetic damage there was only real damage to the battery , the charger is working properly, everything withing the laptop appears intact, and unharmed..

That is not uncommon for a laptop to not "run" unless there is a battery installed .. good or not .. so bypassing may not be an option for you.

Have you tried a new battery? Or did the shop try a new battery?

Gateway mx6450 audio driver

You need to goto the manufacturers website, find their support section and there should be a list of drivers for your specific machine. Installing these should resolve your problem. It will be labelled Audio driver or Sound driver.
Hope this helps,

Laptop will not power up.

  • If possible, make sure there is power coming from the power adaptor with a voltmeter. If nothing shows, the adaptor needs replacing or repairing.
  • Try removing the battery and running on the power adaptor alone. If this works the battery is dead. You can buy a new battery or just run it on the adaptor.

I have a problem charging my Gateway M-6843 Notebook. The battery and the charger don't seem to be the problem, I think it's the Charging port connection. Can this easily be repaired?

It is quite an easy repair, you will need some soldering skills to resolder it or to replace the socket. The hard part is getting to it, you have to vertually take the whole laptop apart to get at the solder side of the board. There are good videos on youtube that show you how it is done if want to take on the task yourself. If not you would be better off taking to your local pc repair shop and see how much they will charge for doing it.

My gateway mx6450 powers on but on blank screen, the lights indicate its running POST and stops.no sound.

Is it possible to connect the laptop to a pc monitor to see if there is any output, if not I'm afraid it would be a serious hardware issue.

Motherboard

There are three possibilities.
  1. The service center doesn't do component-level service on motherboards, so they want to replace the whole board because the DC jack is broken. Many shops work this way.
  2. Because of arcing and heating at the bad DC jack connections, the motherboard may have been damaged enough that it can't be repaired.
  3. They have checked over the board and found no damage to the power jack, but it still isn't charging. This would mean other problems on the board that they can't troubleshoot and repair. This is no reflection on the center. Only the board manufacturer has all the service information and specialized tool do in-depth repairs.
You have two choices.
  1. Take the computer to another shop for a second opinion.
  2. Let the shop replace the motherboard. If this is not an official Gateway service center but an independent, they don't have to get the board from Gateway at full price. There are several online sources of boards that could keep the cost down.

Laptop won't turn on

If you know someone who has the same laptop, try testing your battery and adapter on that laptop just to make sure that they are working fine. If not, it might be a motherboard issue and replacing a laptop motherboard would cost a lot.

If you have a geek friend, ask him/her to use the multimeter to check that the power supply is delivering the correct voltage to the motherboard.

If you dont, try to get another opinion from another place to check if they say it's the same problem.
