Replacing u-joint and leveler in Whirlpool Calypso washer

Need to replace the washplate u-joint and leveler in a Calypso washer. Can't figure out how u-joint comes off shaft. The leveler has been removed along with inner wash plate dome.

How do the seals get installed before the leveler goes over u-joint?

Thanks!

Sir,

You shoukd also install a gasket set.. If you got the top loose lean itback and remove the top splash ring and set aside.. the you need toremove the grey balance ring from basket...where the dome in centermeets he washplate there are 4 slots... take 2 ftat screw drivers andinsert slightly into to beside each other .. push in and lift willremove the dome... then you have 8 7/16ths bolts to remove.... lift utwashplate... under the dome blow wash plate is the leveler andu-joint.. its a good idea to check it since you are that far.. if thereis alot of corrosion you should put in a u-joint kit which has a new lveler/u-joint/gasket kit...

I have a Whirlpool Calypso and I have removed the washplate, lock nut using spanner wrench and u joint assy. I want to remove the metal inner basket so I can clean all the scum inside the outer wash...

Once you remove the agitator, then the nut with the spanner wrench, the basket should lift right out. It may need a little encouragement but it will lift out. I clean the out side tub with a putty knife to get the bulk of the scum off then use some cleaner like 409, or purple power to get the rest off. BE careful around the tub seal around the shaft, you don't want to damage it and have to replace it.

Tip

Calypso Nunater Removal

The following advice gives the steps necessary to remove the wash plate (or nunater) in Calypso model washers. Common complaints of articles of clothing getting caught in the wash plate and/or lodged under it, may facilitate the need to do this:

1. UNPLUG THE WASHER.

2. Open the washer top. Look along the front seam of the washer where the top meets the front. There are a couple of retaining clips (about 2" in from each side) that you will need to push in on with a putty knife while gently lifting up on the top to get the top to release. Carefully open the top and lay it back in a resting position. Make sure you support the lid so it doesn't fall open when you tilt the top back. NOTE: I would recommend using duct tape to keep the lid closed and gently place the top against a wall for support. Use a towel between the cabinet and wall to prevent any damage to painted surfaces. This also reduces the strain on the top panel supports.

3. Remove the tub ring. This is the plastic donut shaped ring that sits on top of the wash tub. There will be a tab on either side of the outer tub near the back that you can use a screwdriver to release the tub ring. The ring is filled with fluid and is used to balance the tub. So, if you hear liquid sloshing around, this is normal.

4. Remove the wash plate center dome from the wash plate. This is the center cone on top of the wash plate. Use a flat blade screwdriver and insert it into any of the slots available along the sides. Gently pry until it pops off. I say "gently", but you may have to use a little muscle to get it to come off. Sometimes they stick. Once the center cone is removed there will be a series of nuts under it.

5. Remove the nuts and the main wash plate should lift out, exposing the inner wash plate. This is another cone shaped device located under the main wash plate. Remove the inner wash plate, using care not to damage the gasket under it. It is common for clothing to become tangled in the leveler or u-joint under this inner wash plate.

6. When all required maintenance is complete, reinstall the inner wash plate, ensuring the gasket is seated under it. The inner wash plate is keyed and should only install one way.

7. Insert the main wash plate and insert mounting bolts. Use a criss-cross pattern when tightening to ensure all bolts are tightened evenly and the gasket seats properly.

8. Reinstall the center dome on the wash plate by snapping it back in place.

9. Reinstall, the balance ring on the wash tub.

The following is a parts list of the most common items that may require replacement when you experience erratic motion of the wash plate, and/or clothing becoming damaged or entangled:

Wash Plate Dome
Main (Outer) Wash Plate
Inner Wash Plate
Leveler Assembly
Inner Wash Plate Seal
U-joint

Searspartsdirect.com has an excellent exploded view illustration of the wash plate assembly and components to illustrate everything I’ve discussed in the steps above. Just type in your model number and click on the “Washplate, Basket and Tub” heading. At a minimum you should replace the Inner Wash Plate Seal anytime you break the seal. This will minimize the possibility of leaks.

I hope this information is found to be helpful.

How do I remove a small part of ziper

You go buy a magnetic or three hook flexible retriever from your hardware store and go fishing down the side.

Or if the zipper is floating about loose you take the back off the machine after dumping the outlet hose into a bucket to drain off the water.

Tip the machine forward or backward so that the outlet hose from the drum to the pump is as near to the ground as possible then remove the clip retaining it to the outer drum and your zipper should be within grabbing distance.

Make sure you have an old towel underneath the hose before you crack the joint

Kenmore calypso has clothing stuck

I believe the problem is the Outer Wash Plate. Replacing it may fix your problem. I am about to do that to mine, so I don't know yet. The outer plastic 'seal' or rim of the washplate should be touching the inner surface of the stainless steel wash basket. So it catches clothes. I just installed a u-joint kit today, so needless to say, I got out the washplate and retrieved my clothes on the way to replacing the u-joint. It involves leaning up the upper lid and cover, removing the tub ring and balance ring and the dome. Then there are 6 bolts to remove the outer wash plate to get to your clothes underneath. Might as well replace the washplate while you are at it. to download the manual, copy this https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/2c1e295a88aaaae885256c5d004632a4/$FILE/8178010.pdf
into your internet explorer address line and save the manual. page 36 starts the instructions I used to remove the washplate and other items. I spent a LOT of time cleaning the gunk out.

Whirlpool Calypso once wash cycle is selected. The machine will fill then stop and there will be a humming noise

does it wash or spin anywhere on the dial.  If not, the coupling that connects the motor to the transmission is defective and need replacing.  A $20 part

If you have already removed the outer washplate, the inner wash plate should just lift off the leveler and u-joint. The washplate dome refers to the center cone that fits on top of the outer wash plate. This piece comes off by inserting a screwdriver in the slots along the sides and gently prying to release the locking tabs. The mounting bolts that secure the outer wash plate also secure the inner wash plate to the u-joint assembly. There is a seal under the inner wash plate that may be holding it on. I don't know of anything else that would be holding it in place. Searspartsdirect.com has an excellent exploded view diagram of the wash plate and components that you may refer to provide you with a perspective on how everything fits together. I hope you find some of this information helpful. Please post back and let me know if you are still having problems.

PS You may have to resort to using a rubber mallet to lightly tap on the inner wash plate to knock it free.
