You probably bought a battery that's not original and is not decoded. Nikon uses coded reading of batteries, so you can't put any battery in it. If it's an original battery with a certificate on it, you should contact your nearest Nikon store.
I'd take it to a "good' repair station for that. It may not be in the viewfinder , but on the sensor, and that is very touchy. When I bought mine, I put the zoom lens on and have never taken it off cause of dust.
The manual (pg 112) simply, and unfortunately, states this message "Press shutter release button again. If error persists, consult with Nikon-authorized service representative".
Some questions that might help: have you had the camera in some extreme conditions, damp, sand, etc. Clean the shutter button really well. Maybe use a small air blower and clean in the shutter release creases.
In the end, if the error continues, it will need to be serviced.
We tried the same lens on another Nikon (D90) and auto focus did not work.
We mounted a new set of lens on the original D40x, and it worked.
Turns out the 2 year Nikon lens (18mm-135mm) was bad. Nikon lens have a 5 year warrantee. The lens will be sent back to Nikon with no service or shipping charge.
