I installed a 640c deskjet using the wizard. It is OK on black and white from WORD and EXCEL but refuses to print color photos or even color pages from the net. The print test results after head cleaning is ok but on actual printing it leaves the color sections blank and only print the black portions. I do not have a manual but reading the manual on the net gets me nowhere. I suspect a problem with the setting . Pse help/
Thanks for the suggestions but nothing has been succesful . After trying everything else I replaced the cartridge and now I can't get it to print at all. After switch on the printer goes through the normal startup procedure and sems to be Ok but as soon as I try to print,it progessess only as far as the paper feed and then the error lamp starts to flash. I get not fault indication except the message that the document failed to print. Is there no self diagnostic facility or program that can be used on this printer??Thanks for the suggestions but nothing has been succesful . More than likely you have a bad color ink cartridge. I am a printer tech for a large corporate office and have run into this problem numerous times, especially with people who purchase those ridiculous remanufactured cartridges. STAY AWAY FROM THEM!
Anyhow, if the other suggestion you got doesn't work, I would simply replace the color cartridge with a new HP #49 cartridge.
I am sure that you can go into the properties for the printer setings and choose an appropiate colorseting ..it is probably set to save ink......so u can go to printers in control panel and right click on your printer that shows there and probably just mess with teh setting a little ....
another idea is to just delete the printer from there and reinstall it again.......

I found perhaps a couple of cheats when it comes to desktop printers. Their is a RESET BUTTON on the cartage itself that will give you more ink out of your cartage.
This is all HP recommends for the HP Deskjet 2460, so I wouldn't suggest buying anything else. First of all it might not fit and second, even if it fits, other issues may come with using those. If you can't see the list here it is: HP 21 BlackHP 21 Black TwinpackHP 21/22 Black/Color ComboHP 21/22 Quad PackHP 22 Tri-color TwinpackHP 22 TricolorHP 58 Photo
the answer to your question is yes,it can still print with only one cartridge installed. If you do not have a replacement cartridge, and the quality of your printouts is not a concern, you can still print in ink-backup mode. Consider the following guidelines before printing in ink-backup mode:
If you remove the tri-color cartridge, printouts will be in grayscale.
If you remove the black or photo cartridge, the product will print more slowly and the colors in the printouts will vary.
press OK button to clear the error message like cartridge missing after removing one cartridge.
To customer of HP deskjet 990cki: I purchased the HP photosmart Plus B209 ~ January 2010. 3 months into, I have learned that when the color ink that you don't use evaporates, the black ink will not work at all, no matter what you adjust or clean. To make it work you have to purchase more color ink...on & on & on..$$$$. Neither HP nor Best Buy will refund my investment. Spoken with HP customer service reps. in the Philippines & Canada both being outside of the US. NO customer satisfaction. No refunds. I suggest Boycotting both corps.
please printer driver setting .. give a print ...select your printer and go to printing preference then go to color tab check for any setting like print in color in gray and print in color ....... select print print in color ......and try ....
i have an hp and find that they (color carts) cannot be refilled- the clever b*st*rds!! they stepped the ink reservoirs so, if you don't insert the re-fill needle 'just right', it bleeds into the others and you end up with a 'muddy' print-out! you need to buy a new hp cart, or shop around for a generic cart (cheaper) google your product & cart #. you may find a source for a cheaper cart. the black carts. can be re-filled! good luck!
some printers share the ink from color to black but you can select if you wants to use only black just go to printer than properies than select to use only black but you probably have to remove the empty color one
