Question about PC Desktops

8 Answers

I have used my Maxtor One Touch 4 external hard drive for about 4 weeks. I disconnected it from my computer at the office, brought it home and connected it to my laptop: blue light flashes on then off, the H/d spins up but the computer does not recognize a connection. I have a 2nd Maxtor One Touch 4 external hard drive and it works fine. I utilized the same cables and still no connection for #1. Any ideas how to make this work? I have important data that must be recovered.

Are the operating systems identicle? Here is the first thing I would look at. Go to "my computer" on your desktop and see if your computer is even recognising the external drive when connected. If it is then its a sotware problem, and at least we narrowed it down. Then if it shows up there right click and go to properties, in there you can do a little troubleshooting with the available tools. I don't want to confuse you so let's just see if the drive shows up in thete, or the device manager, you enter like this Start,Settings, Control panel, Device manager, and hardware, look under drives and see if the removable drive shows up there, Stick with me through tis and we will fix it, Be aware that half a dozen so called experts are going to jump in here now that I gave them a starting point and try to fix your computer wit a single question, or a suggestion that can cause damage, this is an ongoing situation that we are trying to take care of. But I like to do things the right way and that requires feedback from you, I will find you again later after you have checked the things I aske you to, Ok later then, Gym

I hope you are using the same platform at both locations. IE windows vista on both machines or windows xp on both. as with anything if they are one and the other they dont like to play together.
start by trying it back at work and be sure it works there. if it does then the format is not compatable with the new machine you are tyring to put it on. Also sometimes there is a file on the machine you started on that sort of locks the data so no one else can steal it. for this you would have to consult the instruction book.

Uhmmm.............

Its nothing but Malfunction ( Hard disk Failure )...........

In order to recover data ...............

You should be able to still see these hard drives a "physical drives" when you run a Format Recover.

A lot of these new external hard drives have Fat32 partition. They make them Fat32 and not NTFS becasue if you are running Windows 98 or ME on your computer it means that the external drive can still be seen by your PC (older operating systems do not recognise NTFS).

A "Format Recover" search should recover the entire partition. However if it is Fat 32 you will need to use our new beta version with Fat 32 support. It can be downloaded here:

http://download.getdata.com/RecoverM...-2005-beta.exe

If the scan has already found 2700 files then it has found enough to rebuild the partiton. Whilst the search is in progress, click on the OPTIONS button and go to the FILE TYPES tab, uncheck all the file types so that there are none selected. Click OK and the search will continue, but should run much faster now...

Or if u wanna help :)

Thanks.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Since by testing/using the 2nd Maxtor external hard drive on your home PC works, then it has just confirmed that it is the 1st Maxtor that is the issue and not USB port or the cable nor your home PC.

It could be the power supply, or the internal electronics or the hard drive itself inside the 1st Maxtor that may be faulty. To determine, the HD inside the 1st Maktor has to be extracted and connected to an external IDE/SATA to USB adapter. This process then would elminate the possibility of the electronics interface as the culprit. If it works, then the housing/electronics of the 1st Maxtor is faulty. If it still doesnot work with the IDE/SATA to USB adapter, then you have a faulty hard drive.

If the hard drive is deemed faulty, your best bet would be to download, install and run file recovery program. An example of which is GetDataBack.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

If you already tried connecting the drive on a different USB port the next thing that you can do here is to connect the external drive to a different computer it will be better if you will connect it to a desktop and back up all the file if you can access it using a different computer because this drive is going bad already...

Try diffrent usb ports, if possibly try another computer or two.

try this also

turn the pc off
plug in the drive, turn on the computer and see if its detected.

this is just a start so report back with results.

does the drive make a sound? clicking possibly? clicking would indicate a problem in the drive.

there is a normal hard drive inside the usb case if you are outside of warranty you could try removing the hdd from the usb case and connect it directly to the computer. but if the drive is clicking or you hear other odd sounds the drive most likely has a fault that would require service.

this IS the MAXTOR warranty service

External Hardisk Maxtor 4 One Touch not detected

Have you tried different USB cables with the drive? If the drive is self powered (no ext power supply) which I think that one is, then it needs a really good cable to draw the 5 volts from the USB port. If you have tried a known working cable, then it could be the USB controller or the disk itself. You can buy the USB box on eBay really cheap and move the drive over.

Purchased Maxtor ONE TOUCH III. when I had XP. Now that I have Vista, mAXTOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. iS THERE AN UP-DATE? nEED HELP. Thanks Marty xmartico@san.rr.com

Hey xmartico,

If your recent update from Windows XP to Windows Vista has been the only major change to your computer system since you could access your Maxtor One Touch III last, you may simply need to reinstall the Maxtor software to resolve the problem.

Information provided by the manufacturer has suggested that if no password was ever set, the hard drive should work with Vista immediately with no additional work required. If you had chosen a password however, you may need to reinstall the software and reboot every time you disconnect/shut down the external drive, or disable your user account control (UAC). Please keep in mind though that disabling UAC is strongly discouraged, as it may open your computer to attacks by various malware programs including viruses and spyware.

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly recommend contacting Maxtor directly for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
