Question about Welding Tools

Dirty weld Sir, I have been tig welding for 38 years and this is the second syncrowave 250 I have had that after a few years has started doing the same thing. I took the other one to a Miller factory sales/service facility a number of times, they sent a technician to my shop to see if maybe there was something there to cause the problem but finally they gave up, they couldn't fix it. I bought another one and now have the same problem. I think it is a printed circuit problem. I have an L-Teck squarewave 250hp tig welder that I have had for 15 years and still works like new, also a Esab tig 250 and a Lincoln275 tig that work fine, so there isn" a problem with the power supply and I have changed bottles, torches, cups, tungsten and everything else to no avail. I'll be buying another welder if I can't fix this one and it won't be a Miller syncrowave 250. Thanks for your response, Marv.

Clean your metal with a good peace of the green scotch guard scrub pad prior to the weld. Also try turning up your gas and move a little faster when using filler wire, rember to much heat causes a darker dirter weld.hope this helps

I have a Miller Syncrowave 250 DX and it has 3 fans, 1 come on as soon as machine comes on and after welding for about 10min the other 2 come on but they are not

Do you mean to say that the other 2 should come on, but are not? Perhaps you are welding using lower settings than before, and the machine just isn't heating up as quickly. Is there a point at which the fans do come on? Say thirty minutes into the job instead of ten? Maybe you were afraid to run it too long without the cooling fans on and so stopped prematurely, before the thermostat turned them on? Check fuses and breakers.

I have a miller sycrowave 250DX i have been tig welding for about 10 years i bought this machine 2nd hand hoping it would work ok when i weld in AC and hq the arc seems like it just wants to stop it...

Did the machine ever work properly? I am assuming you are using a remote for tig welding. If you watch the points, does the HF stay on after the 5 to 10 seconds as you stated. It should stay on as long as you activate the machine. Make sure your Start Mode is in continuous. See page 42. Since there are so many options, check page 34 for help setting the options. If you still cannot get ti to weld properly, contact Miller for service. https://www.millerwelds.com/files/owners-manuals/O363AU_MIL.pdf

Tig will work normally on aluminum for a few minutes then will cut out and the only way to start it again is to scratch start it but then it will only work for a little while

this seems to be a duty cycle of the type of welder you may have, the other thing im thinking you need to be in continious cycle mode ,theere should be a switch allowing continious cycle also the main switch should be on ac mode for welding aluminum. the tungsten should be 1% with a green paint on the end .you mention you have to scratch to restart the welder you have might need a high frequency box of its own that also hooks to the welding machine, small amp welders have small duty cycle which means it will shut down if its getting over worked or hot good luck

TIG welder help

Choose the electrode to use for the project you are starting as well as the variety of alloys you'll use such as the 6061 Aluminum alloy electrode. Grind the electrode to a point. Try to create a tip and sharpen it to help it become more rounded as you weld. Place the electrode into an electrode holder with the tip about 1/4-inch away from the sheath. Choose the settings on your tig welder. The three main ones are AC, DCEP and DCEN. Choose AC for aluminum. Slide the "cleaning/penetrating" slider more to the penetrating side. Set the "air on" to five seconds and the "max amps" to 250. Turn on the gas. For aluminum, use pure argon. For steel, an argon and carbon dioxide mix. Scrub your welding table or flat piece of sheet metal with a wire brush to make it clean and flat. Gear up in full welding safety gear including hood, goggles, apron and gloves. Hold the electrode in your dominant hand and start your welding project. Check your settings every so often to make sure they haven't changed and adjust as needed.
