Whenever I plug in the usb for the external hard drive, the computer can read it and all but it wont show up on My Computer at all. It was installed and still nothing happened. I see a Safely Remove Hardware Icon, but it doesnt do much since I can't even drag anything to my external hard drive. help.!! I tried to right click on my computer, and go to manage but no disk showed up on the right of it. Are their any other solutions that i can try to fix this problem

Definitely, You must turn off the External Hard drive when it is not in use, because as it is external and it comes with an external power supply, the power supply will not cut-off automatically when the computer is turned off. This is not the case for Internal hard drives that are built-in in the computers, their power supply will cut off automatically when the computer is shut down.
You can turn ON the external HDD when ever you need, that is even when u are working with the computer and if you doesnt need the hard drive then you can left it OFF....When ever you need the hard drive, you can just turn ON...and dont unplug and plug the USB wire frequently, let it be plugged in the computer. Whenever there is a need unplug and take it away. Because if you unplug and plug it back many times, then the usb port may become wide, which results in frequent disconnection of the device that is connected to that particular usb port...
Guess it is useful....
Even though you may hear the motor turning in your external drive the drive may not be able to read the information on the platter(s) because the arm isn't working. This cannot be fixed; you'll have to buy another external drive. There are services that can retrieve the data on the broken drive. Google "data recovery services" and prepare to spend big bucks.
Try it on a different USB port or on a different computer - is this hard drive powered via a mains cable ? If so is that plugged in and switched on as well ?
Also does the hard drive have an on off switch at the back or on it anywhere that needs turning on ?
Does this hard drive have a firewire port or another way of connecting to it ?
I have been using this hard disk for about 6 months now. It stopped
working. The power and the usb cable are connected. I use Windows Xp
and it doesnt read it. And for some reason most of the time when i open
'my computer' and the hard disk usb cable is plugged in 'my computer'
stops responding !! However the 'safely remove disk' icon comes on the
task bar and i can remove it from there. But i cant read it from
explorer. The light on the HD keeps blinking. It reads my friends HD
and flash drive. Please help me.
Try these steps:
- Right-click on "My Computer"
- Click "Manage"
- Click on the "Disk Management" icon in the left column (Under the "Storage" category"
- If your disk appears on the right-hand side, then try to right-click on it and create a partition.
The issue may just be that, since the disk is not partitioned/formatted, a drive letter has not been assigned, which would cause it to not show up in the "My Computer" list
