To properly charge the Zen should be in the on position. Disconnect it, turn it off. Leave it off for about 10 minutes. It should reset. Turn it on and reconnect it to recharge. Do not attempt to do anything else until it completely recharges, to repeat: Let it charge in the on position.

What did you do before the problem was showed up? I have same bug since the moment I was try to connect my ZEN Vision M thru iPod cable. I still can use it as player, but lost the ability to syncronize it with PC. Looks like I fucked up something in my hardware.
Don't worry, it can be after first connection with computer. Just wait about one day till it's battery will be empty and then charge battery and turn on your mp3. :)
If you don't mind losing your music that you stored (not too sure if you do lose your music, but just in case),
find the reset hole on the side of the player, below the power/hold switch, push it with a paper clip or something of that size.
If that doesn't work, wait for the battery to die completely, then charge and turn it back on.
