Purchase an AV Scart Hub (a switching box/scart box),and connect all of your devices to your tv directly.

Hooking up DVD/VCR combo to directTV and console RCA

I'd first just hook up the DVD/VCR to the TV and get that working. I'm assuming all you need is the standard cable type connection. This will at least your 4 year old happy. Then you can experiment with the S cable. The S cable will give a cleaner signal from the DVD to the TV. then hook up audio and video cables from the Direct TV to the DVD input. The audio and video will be cleaner using S cables and audio and video cables, but stadard TV cable should get you going. You didn't mention what model DVD player you have. You may have to select the correct inout on the DVD for the Direct TV connection.

Connecting dvd/vcr combo with tv and digital cable box.

You trying to put the DVD/VCR combo between the cable box and the TV? OK, cable out goes to vcr in, vcr out goes to tv, I think you got that. Now there should be a tv/vcr button on the vcr/dvd, you need to press that when the unit is on. Also, make sure you are on the correct input on both the vcr and the tv, usually video 1 or AUX and choose line in or L1 on the vcr/dvd. If the tv/vcr button is toggled, itll completely bypass the vcr/dvd player.

Hooking up a dvd/vcr player

The easiest way to connect the unit is via coax. You can come out of your satellite receiver via the "Out to TV" on the back of the receiver to the "In from Ant" on your DVD/VCR combo. You can then connect another coax from the "Out to TV" on the DVD/VCR combo to the "Ant/Cable" input on the back of you TV. Make sure the satellite receiver and the vcr are both modulated to the same channel, normally channel 3.

Connecting VCR/DVD combo to TV

If that is the only input that the tv has it's still usable. Just plug the Cable TV or antenna cable into the DVD/VCR coaxial input labeled "in" (instead of the TV's) and hook one from the DVD/VCR's "out" to the "in" on the tv. Turn the TV to channel 3 or 4 (depends on DVD/VCR settings) and use the built in TV tuner on the DVD/VCR to change channels.

Connecting VCR/DVD combo

If you are able to you can connect to the RF connector (F Type Conncetor) on the TV. This should work. The layout is from the VCR (RF to TV) to the TV antenna F type connector from your Cable box to the Antenna in of the VCR that way you have cable through the VCR, and access to you VCR and DVD all controlled by the Cable and VCR remotes (set TV to Channel 3, set VCR to Channel 3) and use the Cable box as the tuner, Use the TV remote to switch between Cable and VCR inputs then use the VCR remote to switch between the VCR and DVD input.

Multiple video inputs

Unfortunately, you cannot use the connectors at the same time. The S-Video connector overrides the standard video connector. This is why they share common audio left/right inputs. If you could use them separately, they would each have their own set of audio inputs. (S-Video does not carry audio signals on the cable.) I'm assuming that you are connecting your Satellite as an input to your VCR, and then your VCR to the TV via a video connection. The VCR passes the satellite signal through unless you are watching a tape, then it overrides the dish signal. You have a few choices here: 1. You can connect the coaxial (RF) output from the VCR to the TV, and watch the satellite and VCR on channel 3 (or 4). You can then connect the DVD via S-Video, and watch it on "video". This is the simplest solution, and provides the best picture quality for the DVD (with this TV), but lower quality for the dish and VCR. 2. You can connect the DVD player via RF (if it supports that), watch the DVD on channel 3, and connect the VCR via video. This will make the DVD picture quality terrible. 3. You can replace the VCR with a combo DVD/VCR unit. You can then connect the S-Video out from the combo unit to the TV. This is a more expensive solution. 4. You can replace the TV with a model that includes more inputs. This is the most expensive solution, but will allow you to watch your DVD over component cables (very high quality) and VCR and dish over S-Video. Ironically, the obvious choice, connecting the DVD as an input to the VCR (as a pass-through) simply WON'T WORK. The signal put out by the DVD player is "copy protected" (using a system called MacroVision) which the VCR will refuse to play, even as a pass-though. Best of luck with this. Given that you are trying to make this all work without replacing equipment, I recommend option #1, until you decide to break down and buy a shiny new HDTV. They are coming down in price every week, but only you can decide when the time is right.
