Question about Sony XM-2165GTX Car Audio Amplifier

1 Answer

Amplifier, not as loud, getting quieter

When i first got my amp it worked fine, almost 4 years later and it was great until recently i have had to turn my volume up more in order to get the same volume output from the subs. My 4 year warranty on the amp is soon running out and I took the amp into best buy... they told me "an amp either works or it doesn't" and basically kicked me out the door. Can anyone help me with my problem either by telling me what is wrong with the amp or by telling me how i can legitimately claim my warranty and get a new amp?

Re: Amplifier, not as loud, getting quieter

Have you tested your speakers yet? They will sometimes age and cause a problem.

It just stopped working after about 4 years. the amp went in and out a couple of times then it just stopped working.

ok what type of amp are we talking about, what impedence and voice coils are your subs, and have you checked power, ground, fuses, etc... a quality amplifier kicker, jl, mtx, rockford... etc... should, if set up and wired properly, last you a very long time... I actually had a kicker amp since 96 and it still worked great to the day i gave it to my buddy... That's 11 years old with no issues...

Sub continuously thumps when stereo is on

The remote on might be suppling intermitten power. Try jumping the remote on from the power wire
If you've abused it, It may be going straight DC output (if that's the case you need to repair or replace the amp)

No sound

Try running the amp without the speaker wires hooked up. See if the light is still on. If it is still on, the disconnect all power to amp for 12 hours. This should reset the amp. Then try again without and then with the speakers. This should fix the problem. If the light is still on, that means a capacitor inside could have overheated and fried the output.

Buzzing bass Amp combo

The problem you have mentioned is a common one with old sets, but it also occurs in new ones also, though not frequent. You can fix this just by changing the electrolytic filter capacitors in the power supply and sub filters on the amp PCB. The new capacitors should be of the same or higher voltage rating and same capacity rating as of the existing ones. And as it is such an old one, it is better to change all the electrolytic capacitors to avoid any further problems.
