Is the blue light blinking? I had the same thing occur to my I/O Magic 250 GB USB drive a couple of days ago. I did an online chat with I/O Magic tech support and the guy said you can RMA (return) it if it's in warrantee, but otherwise too bad. Mine is out of warrantee. Since the enclosure contains an ordinary hard drive inside, just carefully peel off the little metal plate at the back of the unit, undo the two screws and slide out the drive. The are two plugs and four screws to free the drive. To get your data back once you've got the drive out, you've got three choices: buy a new enclosure ($20+), buy a toaster ($50) (it's like an enclusre, but you just pop a drive into the top, like bread into a toaster), or open up your computer and connect the drive directly as any other. Oh and don't buy another I/O Magic product again.

My I/O Magic Gigabank 500 was tipped over by my daughter. It now beeps intermittently and is not recognized by my computer.

it is possible you have a bad drive now as they cant be moved while on. However, turn it off let it cool down. Turn off the computer it was on. now disconnect it from both Data and wall for hard drive. give it say 20-30 minutes. put it back in the correct position, and try turning it on. after it has come up to speed plug it back into the computer. if you hear a sound try to compare it to one of these. you will notice that they have a play button next to the sounds.

Also IO magic isn't the hard drive manufacture IO uses other brands of hard drives to put inside their units. http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php these guys have a great sound of some failed drives.

if the drive can reset itself then all will be back to normal. if not you will need to do a drive test call them to find out what they recommend.

I made a mistake installing my new WD 500 PATA drive. I need to remove the DDO because I can't see more than 131 Gigs of the drive. I'm using XP Pro and my MoBo bios will see the full 500 gigs....

If you have XP installed on this drive and it is functioning correctly it would be best to use a third party software to resize the C drive or create an additional partition with the free space that you are not seeing. Installing an application like Acronis Disk Director or Partition Magic will give you much more flexability on your storage space.

This is a freeware software link below for EASEUS Partition Manager.

I cannot acess the hdd,it keeps on asking format but windows cannot format it.

If possible get partion manager s/w and format it,it's better you have partio magice bootable CD with you and format with it,even after using partition magice cd, if your hdd doesnt format, there is a way to open a hdd and fixing the head of hdd try it out and let me know.

There is a certain amount of very voltage sensitive circuitry in the enclosure and it was damages by over voltage. Your best bet is to replace the enclosure. These are available from China on eBay for around $18. Much less than to have your enclosure repaired.

Does IO Magic supply a free copy of EasyRecovery Professional to customers who experience data loss on one of their drives?

Yes. Go to this site, download the zip, and install the software. It's called: Ontrack or something like that. This is what was recommeded to me via an online chat w/ I/O Magic's Technical Help representative. Sadly, it didn't fix my problem, but the recovery software could come in handy for future issues. Backup hard drive to an external hard drive

"what the error actually says is, you have either run out of space, or the backup file (.bkf) is too large for this disk. note: if the disk is formatted with FAT32, the maximum possible size for the backup file is limited to 4 gigs."

That error means that the FAT32 file system only allows 4GB files or smaller to be transfered. The chance that the backup file (.bkf) is larger than 4GB suggests that this file is causing your problems. You could try manually copying around that file (selecting all files from that folder except the large one) and see if that works.

Usually you will get many errors copying a drive directly as system files will be inaccessible and whatnot. Your best bet is to limit your copying to "C:\Program Files\" and "C:\Documents and Settings\", assuming you have Windows.
