Question about Compaq CPQ/Presario5006EA uWave2 K7 Motherboard
I am an older gal who took Comptia A+ so I know enough to get into a lot of trouble but also can dig myself out of a deep hole too. The bios version is no where to be found. I get into cmos and there is no way to get into dos to fdisk and reformat and reinstall XP. I have done the delete or the PF10 to get into cmos but not much there. I have tried the tab, pause, pf all and they don't do anything. I tried to get c prompt from XP but it wouldn't let me changed switches or anything it just said something like c: settings and documents\jessica. I tried to uninstall so much to get it to let me install from the cd and in doing so I ended up with safe mode. A this point I doubt if I can update bios, I don't think this one is supported and it's too old and well it's a Compaq. I have only flashed a bios once successfully about three years ago and it was a Dell driver and learned the hard way that you have to unplug so much for the drives to allocate drives correctly even though they say the bios is for your specific configuration. I would like to just reinstall XP but if not I would like to just fix the corrupted file and use machine as word processor for daughter at best now. Right now I can get into to with safe mode but in order to be able to load up anything off of XP cd it is wanting system 32\hal.dll file in order to run things ...it lies too. I have gone to the website for this motherboard but they start helping at 486 and this is 386. I knew better than to buy Compaq but daughter bought it without consulting. I have gone to HP but those guys in India or where ever don't have a script for this one. I spent a lot of time chatting with online support and it is a complete waste of time. Not much on the internet. This machine has floppy but not my other machine ( I don't know why they got rid of floppy's) so how do I replace corrupted file on this machine since it won't read XP cd unless it has this file. All programs are deleted so can't get on internet with it. I would like to take sledge hammer to it but we could use it.
IT WONT RECOGNIZE THE drive because its ntfs so just get it to A: then type fdisk and delete non dos partition the repartition it in fat32 then put in the xp disk and boot it up now you can reload windows works every time peace

Have you tried to make a bootable floppy on another working Windows XP OS? try to make a bootable floppy, insert it into the troublesome machine, start it and boot. once booted, run your fdisk and start to install windows XP. Or check to see if you can adjust your boot order options to allow you to boot from cd first and start to install Xp from a bootable cd without the need for fdisk. I hope this helps! good luck.

If you need to install XP, you need to get into the cmos settings and in the standard settings enable your cd drive as the first boot device, save setings and exit. Put the XP cd in your drive before you boot the pc, then when on the screen you are prompted to press enter to boot from cd, it will then go through the installation process and ask if you want to format in fat32 or NTFS, the later is the norm for XP. You can delete or set up partitions and format using the cd you do not need to use fdisk as XP does not use it unless you format with a win98 cd
