Question about Compaq CPQ/Presario5006EA uWave2 K7 Motherboard

Compaq Presario 5102US with uWave2 motherboard just want to fdisk & reformate

I am an older gal who took Comptia A+ so I know enough to get into a lot of trouble but also can dig myself out of a deep hole too. The bios version is no where to be found. I get into cmos and there is no way to get into dos to fdisk and reformat and reinstall XP. I have done the delete or the PF10 to get into cmos but not much there. I have tried the tab, pause, pf all and they don't do anything. I tried to get c prompt from XP but it wouldn't let me changed switches or anything it just said something like c: settings and documents\jessica. I tried to uninstall so much to get it to let me install from the cd and in doing so I ended up with safe mode. A this point I doubt if I can update bios, I don't think this one is supported and it's too old and well it's a Compaq. I have only flashed a bios once successfully about three years ago and it was a Dell driver and learned the hard way that you have to unplug so much for the drives to allocate drives correctly even though they say the bios is for your specific configuration. I would like to just reinstall XP but if not I would like to just fix the corrupted file and use machine as word processor for daughter at best now. Right now I can get into to with safe mode but in order to be able to load up anything off of XP cd it is wanting system 32\hal.dll file in order to run things lies too. I have gone to the website for this motherboard but they start helping at 486 and this is 386. I knew better than to buy Compaq but daughter bought it without consulting. I have gone to HP but those guys in India or where ever don't have a script for this one. I spent a lot of time chatting with online support and it is a complete waste of time. Not much on the internet. This machine has floppy but not my other machine ( I don't know why they got rid of floppy's) so how do I replace corrupted file on this machine since it won't read XP cd unless it has this file. All programs are deleted so can't get on internet with it. I would like to take sledge hammer to it but we could use it.

What you say makes sense until I do it on this computer. I have done what you are suggesting but it doesn't work. The cmos is already set to boot from the cd first. I made sure of that. I know this makes no sense but when I put in the disk and turn on the machine the ram count goes on but then all I get is a blink _ in the upper left hand corner and it just stops. When I take the XP disk out it will then go into safe mode and if I pick install I get the dreaded Protection Fault TRAP0000000D or if I select go into XP on the computer it will take me in with limited functions. The only thing on the desk top is the recyle bin and no task bar.
I have gone into the desk top by the only means available - Recycle bin and can move around there.

I thought I was able to select the missing system file off the disk and put it into the windows folder this way but it didn't seem to fix it.
So maybe I should try finding an old win 98 floppy boot disk and try to boot to it on this machine it originally had the dreaded ME on it.

I have also tried thru the recycle bin and get to my computer and click on the XP in the cd drive and it opens and then an error message says
"The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll"
I click on ok on this message and it's basically stuck with white out window on top of installation window.
I don't have another floppy drive at home to make a copy to boot from yet but could try that too. I didn't know you could boot from floppy for XP

    Hey sandrew,
you are a smart person. I tracked down my old floppys and found an old Win98 boot floppy. I changed boot order. Then put it in an started and I am getting an a: which means I maybe moments from fdisking this so and so. Keep your fingers crossed. I am too excited...right now I will let you know if it works.

  • Deanne Bee Apr 24, 2007

Well I tried to switch to c:\> but it says it is invalid. I can switch to d:\> and back to a:> but for some reason it doesn't recognize the c drive??? I thought I was moments away from fdisk and of course the universe plays once again with my head. Ok so I am back at a:\> with the Win 98 boot do I fdisk from here?

I am not sure what you mean by click live support, if you mean there should be a live support button on this page I do not see one and I looked around on the site and didn't see anything that said live support. Does it go by another term?

  • Deanne Bee Apr 25, 2007

Well I hadn't left but my messages were not posting and I wasn't getting you postings either there was some sort of big delay. Then I got a whole bunch of your messages all at once. You had left thinking I had already left. Well you know I went to the link you gave me and then I decided to think outside the box. I decided to see if Win98 cd would format for me....hey it did and right now it is installing win98 as I write this. I may try to upgrade to XP if possible from there. But hey you got me thru the worst of it which was cleaning out that disk. It should have been so easy but as you saw it was bucking the whole way. I want to thank you for hanging in there and sticking it out. I have been to so many sites and with chat with HP and got no where and they hadn't a clue and didn't bother to try anything. No one addressed this on so many sites. As you can see these old compaqs with their awful cmos and bios with no version numbers can be a pain to try to figure out.
I sent in a great rating for you.
    Thanks again.

Have you tried to make a bootable floppy on another working Windows XP OS? try to make a bootable floppy, insert it into the troublesome machine, start it and boot. once booted, run your fdisk and start to install windows XP. Or check to see if you can adjust your boot order options to allow you to boot from cd first and start to install Xp from a bootable cd without the need for fdisk. I hope this helps! good luck.

If you need to install XP, you need to get into the cmos settings and in the standard settings enable your cd drive as the first boot device, save setings and exit. Put the XP cd in your drive before you boot the pc, then when on the screen you are prompted to press enter to boot from cd, it will then go through the installation process and ask if you want to format in fat32 or NTFS, the later is the norm for XP. You can delete or set up partitions and format using the cd you do not need to use fdisk as XP does not use it unless you format with a win98 cd

alot of motherboards use shared memory for display meaning that if the memory cards lose connection no video.
take memory cards out of the computer and clean the gold contacts with pencil eraser and try rebooting the computer to see if you get video if not try 1 memory card at a time to see if there is a bad stick of ram causing it not to show video.
