Hi the microphone on the webcam probably isn't working or its turned off or volume is muted / low. I would suggest you get a 2-5 usd cheap mic from a local store and plug it into your sound card mic plug. Problem solved.

Some webcams and programs require additional software, although that should be installed with the webcam if things are right.
But is does not harm to check if your Java, Flash andQuicktimesoftware are installed and up to date.
But certainly check your DirectX software, since all video applications, including webcams, use DirectX for video processing.
Try downloading the latest DirectX version and install it (Windows XP: DirectX 9.0c- Windows Vista: DirectX 10).

Not Showing the Other Person
Online Status
When one of your Skype contacts is not online, they will not show up in your list of available contacts.
It is possible to hold a conversation with someone who is not on your friend list, however; if you are trying to talk to someone you have previously chatted with but does not show up on your list of contacts, check to make sure that you have added the person.
All of your added contacts will show up on your list; the ones who are offline will have a grayed-out Skype icon and the contacts who are online will have a green icon next to their name.
If you cannot see the person's name, you may need to search for them and create a new contact.
Availability
Skype users have the option to change their availability when they are signed into the program. The status availability options are: offline, online, SkypeMe!, invisible, away, not available and do not disturb.
If the person you want to talk to is signed in but has selected the "offline" or "invisible" availability, you will not see them as online.
For the name to show up on your list of online contacts, the person must change their availability.

Blocked
If you cannot see a person that you have already added to your list, there is a chance that the person has blocked you.
When a Skype user chooses to block you, you will not be able to see anything about availability.
Even if the user is online and accepting messages, you will not be able to see the status and messages will remain undelivered.
Video
If you are trying to hold a video chat with a Skype contact but cannot see the person, there are several possible reasons.
If either of your Internet connections are too slow to support streaming video, the video will not come through.
If you have been chatting by text and switch to video, the other person will need to enable the video stream before you can see them.
Other culprits can include out-of-date webcam drivers, unplugged webcams or another video-enabled application running at the same time.
Share Both Screens in Skype
Sign in to Skype and right-click on the contact you want to share screens with.
Click "Call" to place a call to the user. When he answers, the Skype call toolbar will appear beneath his avatar.
Click the double square icon on the toolbar.
This is the share button.
Click "Show Entire Screen." Your screen is now visible.
Ask the other person to click on the double square icon and then "Show Entire Screen."

Microphone not working

Hello.
1. Audio settings all versions

Skype:
Skype-->Main window…..>Tools -> Options -->Sound Devices-->audio device/USB/etc Audio Device (do NOT use windows default device)
You can also tick the ring pc speaker check box as this is a good backup to alert you even
if the main speakers are off or turned down.

Windows:
Start-->Control panel-->Sound and Audio devices
On the audio tab set the default playback device to your main soundcard (AC97/Audio-chip/add-on-adapter), etc.
Your installed audio device must be present there.
If not, reinstall audio device

2)Check if your micro (pink) and speaker (lime) jacks are really correct and fully inserted!
They sometimes stuck.
For test only you can use earphone instead of microphone for Line In.
Standard micro in Line In will NOT work.
Go to:
Start
Programs
Accessories
Entertainment or go to
Volume Control; right click on loudspeaker icon in Task Tray
Options
Microphone
Scroll down
Check "Microphone"
If the bar "Microphone" is available, the microphone is detected by Windows now go on
(If not, Windows has a problem with your microphone)
Just to check if your microphone is broken or bad, you can use your headphones instead. They really work!
Which one L or R is microphone now, I think it's L
Check "Advanced properties"

Check Micro "Advanced"
Open
Check "20db boost" or "1.MIC boost" depending on language version
Volume level can be left in any position.
Mute microphone!!!

3. Check audio now on windows base.
Start
Programs
Accessories
Entertainment
Soundrecorder

4. Once done, test with Skype Test Call echo123.
Good Luck

Please Vote.

Does my computer have a built in mic?

Hi Jaygeewallac,

I tried to locate a manual for your computer to find more details - no success. (But found a lot of people having the same issue...) Regardless - I don't think that your computer is equipped with a microphone; laptops usually have a built-in one, desktops don't.
You can always try: Go to start -> All Programs -> Accessories ->
Entertainment -> Sound Recorder
and try to record something. If you were successful - your PC has a built in microphone!

However - if you want to use Skype, I strongly recommend to use a headset with a microphone. I am using this program daily and although my laptop has a mic and speakers, I always use my headset. Without it you have to stick your head to where your mic is located and turn the volume of the speakers up a lot so you are able to understand what your son is saying. Don't do it.

A USB headset costs you between 20 -50$ and you can either get it online (Newegg or Tigerdirect) or at your local RadioShack or BestBuy. I would recommend buying it locally, because in case it does not fit your head comfortably, you can exchange it very easy.
I would furthermore recommend a USB connection, because it is not as flimsy as two small audio connectors and also easier to plug in and out.

Did this informatin help you? If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I am happy to help you with whatever you want to know.

Hooking up a microphone to a computer

Any mic is fine. You will have to enable it in the sound mixer though.

Goto..
Start - Control Panel - Sound
Select Recording and then select Microphone.
Select Configure at the bottom of that window.
The next window will open and you will see Set Up A Microphone.

It will walk you through setting it up and making sure it is active.
