Re: my dvd rom drive won't read any disks
The yellow exclamation point in the device manager means there is a problem with the drive. It could something as simple as installing a driver for the drive or it could be that the drive is bad. Hope this helps & please rate my answer. Thanks.
I have a similar problem. The lazer will move back and forth but I don't here the computer pick up and hmmmm like a fan picking up speed the way it should when it is reading a disk. My divice manager says my drive is working properly. At any rate, the problem appears to be the same.

Yes there may be some ways to test it. Let's try the following. When you open your laptop, open the cd rom's tray and check to see where the lens mechanism is positioned. Normally it should be near the main central motor. Try to turn off the laptop, but leave the tray opened. When the laptop is turned off, use one one hand to move the lens assembly away from the main motor. Move it to the middle of the distance from the center to the edge. Carefull not to touch the lens when you do this. Now place a bootable cd (like the ones that come with your operating system or anything else you can find) and start the laptop back again and instruct it to boot from the cd-rom. It should make it try to boot from there. If this fails, the cd-rom is indeed damaged and most likely will need to be replaced. You may try to clean the lens assembly but I can't be sure this will help, based on your problem.
Please run these instructions first, then reply to me in order to see what's next to do.
Usually when you buy a DVD ROM drive it comes with software. However, I bought a LG one and it didn't come with any software. All I can tell you is to update the system BIOS and the firmware that came with the drive. Look on the top part of the drive when you take it out of the system.
Go to the manufacturer's website and download updated firmware for the unit.
some drives ( multi-Drives ) will read and write CDs but Only read DVDs.
Also check that the Drive supports DVD- Or DVD+ Disks.
Check that there are no yellow Marks In The Device Manager. to Do this:- My Computer/Control Panel/System/Device Manager to ensure all drivers are corectly installed.
ON a computer than can read the disk and has CD/DVD burning software installed on it, check the status of the media sessions. If this was writtien as a multi-session disk and the session has not been closed, many older drives will have difficulty reading it.
If not reading DVD is a pattern (it won;t read ANY DVD, no matter if it's a burned one or an original movie) then the lens is dead. I'm afraid you'll have to go get a new one (new drives are very cheap, usually around 25-30$)
Hello Rfd832, What I see from the description is that the drive is a combo drive. Combo drives are CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives means CD-RW = Compact Disk-Read Write DVD-ROM = Digital Versatile Disk - Read Only Memory so these drives can read and write CDs but can only read DVDs (Cannot write or burn DVDs) If you want to be able to burn DVDs then you need to have DVD RW drive (either DVD+RW or DVD-RW)
You said that you are able to burn DVDs on other computer so please check the label on the DVD drive.. it should be DVD-RW/DVD+RW drive
This is usually caused by dirty drive lens, too scratched CDs or CD burnt at faster speed than your ROM can read. (I am assuming that your pc detect the CD drive and has no hardware conflict with it).
Try reading an unscratched prerecorded (original CD), if it does not read this as well then your lens are dirty, try using a CD lens cleaner if these dont work then you need to open your ROM and use a highly volatile organic lens cleaner chemical.
ITs a dvd rom drive. It will not burn blank dvds in order to burn, it has to cd-r/cd-rw/dvd-r/dvd-rw. If a drive cannot write to a blank disc, it will eject it. Rom drives read only (Read Only Memory), Combo drives- burn cd's only read dvd's, and super drives both read and write to cds and dvds.
