Question about Seagate Free Agent Go Small 12 GB USB External HD ST600121GSA1E1-RK USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

I plug my seagate into the computer. it turns on but then nothing

I was so excited to get this but it seems to not work.. plus there are virtually NO directions except a quick start page. My plug is different.. it has a plug for the Free Agent and then 2 USB plugs attached... do I plug them both in to work? When I do plug it in the Free Agent lights up but nothing comes up on the computer.. its like it isn't even there. Help!!!

Hi,

Plug one usb into your computer and the other end into the drive.
If the light comes on, all is good. The computer should install the device for you automatically. To access the drive, go to My Computer and double click on the Removable Drive. Now you can transfer files.

Hope this helps

And the Free Agent software for synchronising your contacts etc should be in there too, on the drive, follow the instructions as the Free Agent software installs.

The clicking could be a symptom of imminent failure of the hard drive . Back up all information from this drive as soon as possible. It may be something that a program such as checkdisk can fix but be sure to backup drive before attempting any fixes just to be safe. Hope this helps.

If you have another computer, you could try to plug it in there as a slave/secondary drive so that you can try to see if My Computer would still recognize it. If it works, then great, you can still do backups. If not, and you really need that data, you might want to get the services of a data recovery company.

The drive clicks when plugged in but nothing shows up on the computer.. nor does it seem to light up..

do you have a hard drive and cd in the computer already? if so the drive probably wants to be recognized as either a master or slave in a slot that is already taken by an internal component. you will have to change the jumpers on the internal device or unplug it then turn your computer on and then plug the usb drive in. also are you using a 2.0 usb port? it's not the only kind even though they look alike.

Want it 2 be main hard drive on desktop,

Hi,
There seems to be a misconception here. The virtual memory is a part on the Hard drive that your computer uses similar RAM. It only uses it once you have utilized most of your RAM so increasing it would not do much value at all. I suggest you upgrade the physical RAM sticks. (the memory physically attached to the motherboard of your computer). For your Seagate, it would be used just as a storage for data and not as memory. and since it is external, you could also not allocate some part of it to be used as virtual memory.
you could go to a computer store and ask them what memory (RAM stick) would be compatible for your computer if you want to do an upgrade. I'm sure you could also ask them to put it on for you to have the result or your desired amount of memory installed to your computer.
hope this helps.

I have a 1tb seagate desktop, the light doesn't turn on and it makes a clicking sound and when plugged in the computer nothing happens

Try first connecting the drive to a different USB port on your computer and check if it will be working fine, but if still not working better try connecting it to a different computer ad check if same result. If still not working try using a different USB cable and see if that will fix the problem but if still not working the drive is already bad and better try to check it with the manufacturer of your drive and have them recover your data inside it.

You better check with the Seagate people. This seems to be a problem with the casing. And since you're under warranty, you can get a replacement.
