Question about MSI (DRE8) DVD±RW Burner

1 Answer

Bad writing Im currently using a DRE8 at home ( no net connection available) and its working fine when it comes to reading cds and dvds.. burning cds also have no issues. But when i insert a blank dvd to be written, on the drive info in -my computer - it changes to a normal cd drive instead of a dvdrw drive and it doesnt let me write the dvd. only lately ive been trying to burn dvds hence ive not noticed this problem before. I tried downloading updated drivers or firmware from the site but it only offers me a live update download.. which i cant use cos i dont have the net. I downloaded the BIOS flash file provided by the technical support team on the agents site and extracted it and have read the instructions. it asks me to include the port number in the command string, but my drive is an external usb one and the ports specified are for internal primary and secondary ones. i tried using port 1 in the command string in dos and after hitting enter i got a line saying MSIFLASH, something something 2003 .. and the cursor just kept blinking at the next line. there was nothing running or updating or anything.. i thought it might take a while so i left it for over an hour but nothing happend. I restarted the pc and everything is the same as it was.

Re: Bad writing

Take it to a friends house with internet, temporarily install it on his/hers machine, update and flash the firmware to latest and do a test burn there. Install it back to your cpu and see what happens. also, try a different burning software. Good Luck

The drive plays DVDs and can read doc files, but

This problem is normal and exists with many CD/DVD drives.
On some of the drives, if you put in blank discs and try to open the disc in My Computer or Windows Explorer, Windows displays no contents or a blank disc. Whereas on other drives, you get the error message that you mentioned about incorrect function.

What software are you using to burn CDs or DVDs? Are you able to burn CDs but not DVDs or you can't burn both the discs? Did you try a CDs with a different make/manufacturer? Some drives refuse on some disc makes. Try another disc and another writing speed, or try the lowest writing speed available with your software.

Hope that helps,

HP dvd740b does not detect blank CDs and DVDs

i think you,ve hit the nail-on-the-head.
The laser has to power up highrer to write a DVD, or ocassionally have a dual laser. 1 for read/write CD. And 1 For Read/Write DVD.
Certain cd roms, only use CD- media. it,s probably worth checking which media is supported by the drive.
Also check the drives aren,t conflicting, on the same ide channel, sometimes swapping channels, ide primary/secondary can help, or swiitching Master/Slave/cable select jumpers on the drives Themselves.

I can burn cd's but not dvd's

Hello Rfd832,
What I see from the description is that the drive is a combo drive. Combo drives are CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives means
CD-RW = Compact Disk-Read Write
DVD-ROM = Digital Versatile Disk - Read Only Memory
so these drives can read and write CDs but can only read DVDs (Cannot write or burn DVDs)
If you want to be able to burn DVDs then you need to have DVD RW drive (either DVD+RW or DVD-RW)

You said that you are able to burn DVDs on other computer so please check the label on the DVD drive.. it should be DVD-RW/DVD+RW drive

Hope that helps.. :)

Thanks and Regards,

Reads and writes cds, reads dvds but does not burn dvds,

This drive is normally supplied with a couple of Dells.
(because of compatibility) Inspiron 700m,710m

If you have another machine for testing?
check the disk for contents to see if the data burn happened,
this will explain a few things in your processes.

Uninstall/Reinstall the drive and reboot then try again.

Have you tried a full system reinstall yet?
Did it fix your problem? Please let me know thanks

I have problem with my AVERATEC COmputer

This is a common issue with NEC DVD burners, assuming that your NEC DVD burner cannot read and write DVDs anymore. I had a similar issue with my NEC DVD burner, which couldn't read and write CDs, but DVDs successfully. This is usually due to wear and tear of constant usage of the drive itself and sometimes mechanisms inside the DVD burner cease to work. While Windows Troubleshooting, uninstalling and re-installing the drive are suggestable, I am afraid the only option is a complete DVD burner replacement.

Problem burnind and reading!

Check that the writable DVDs you are using are compatible (+/-) with your LG DVD-RAM.
Go to Windows Explorer and check to see if the Sony drive is visible. It may not be connected or the Jumper switch may be set incorrectly.
Check you have drivers installed, take a look in Hardware manager.
Sometimes, it's a little difficult to copy CDs and DVDs when you have more than one burning suite installed - for some reason, they 'just don't get along'. Try uninstalling any suites other than Nero.
Or it may just be that your LG CD-RW drive is just that, and your DVD-RW drive is just that. So it wouldn't be possible to write DVDs on the CD-RW and CDs on the DVD-RW? Though I would assume Nero would detect that and use your hard-drive as temporary storage.
In Nero SmartStart, have you selected the CD or DVD tab to correspond to the project you're burning?
