Now the not so good news. This model uses what I call a "flutter pump" that turns on when the boiler needs more water pumped in if the reservoir is dry and the red light comes on indicating it is out of water.
Generally, if you remove the blue water reservoir and turn on the unit, in about 5 minutes the boiler should have sufficient heat converting the residual water in the system to steam, for at least one or 2 "bursts of steam".

If all this works, then likely the $75 electronic printed ckt board driver detector is okay. It enables the flutter pump, fills the boiler with a few tablespoons of water to be converted to steam and repressurizes the steam system. It is the sequence logic this board does that you can use to determine the bad part, find and replace it yourself. There are many thermostats and sensors and without a schematic it is tough to reverse engineer.

The most expensive parts are the tank heater and sole plate elements followed by the ckt board (make sure you label all the connections & draw a color coded diagram before replacing this part) especially likely if the flutter pump does not turn on and everything else gets hot & steams is okay if unit less than 5-10 yrs old. BTW a new unit is $350 so you have to weigh your options and talk estimate for repair with repair tech if you go that route. A lot can be said if your unit is not that old, have used clear water, allowed steam to run dry (minimizing long term storage with water in unit), and cleaning the boiler as specified in manual. It is worth the price to repair OR replace. It is a great machine.

The steam tank may not be heating because of mineral deposits in the tank. But also do this check first. Open up the tank reservoir cold, and drain all water out, (is it clean inside there when you shine flashlight in there? Rinse with clear filtered water only (low minerals).

Do not use CLR or anything agressive in there. You should have the main unit in full steam mode and the iron control also in full steam mode. Leave one tablespoon of water in the tank, put back together and let the pressure build. Put a clean towel on your ironing board and when iron is at full pressure and heat, hit the burst of steam and look at what comes out of the sole plate. If you see lots of white deposits look at the sole plate and see if the white chunks are coming out steam holes.

When using iron, run it till steam/water tanks are dry, the burst of steam is used in this case to clean the iron of all standing water. Pull the reservoir and allow to cool...once tank is cool drain it as well. Doing this several times should help purge unit of the heavy mineral deposits.

The old Rowenta DG-980 is a consumer grade machine but with commercial quality function and features. My gal who worked at a dry cleaners many years ago loves the DG-980. Here is the scoop on how to get it going if just cleaning it is all it needs (our used one had the same problem and I fixed it by doing the following:

Rowenta recommends that you use clear filtered drinking or bottled water only. I believe them because the system uses brass & aluminum throughout, so salts or acids would cause corrosion.

To clean the system totally, after each ironing session before I put it away, I remove the blue reservoir completely, and run the burst of steam several times until the boiler is empty, and red light indicates it is out of water. I shut the power off and unplug. Wait at least an hour or so, access the boiler tank plug on side & if it is cool to the touch, remove it using a coin (quarter), drain and flush the tank several times with the cleaning tube that came with unit or filtered/drinking bottled water several times over the kitchen sink. Finally, drain all the water completely out of the boiler (I leave the plug & cover off to making sure it is completely dry before putting everything back together, ready for the next time).

After several use cycles of the above should clear out the debris. My 1st experience with a used DG980 had exactly the same problem. P.S. before ironing the first article, use several bursts of steam away from the ironing board surface to clear out any standing water and debris that was is in the system. Hope this helps :O)

If your Rowenta DG 920 is chucking guff from the steam jets you need to flush it as per the instructions. ( ie. Flush every 10 uses ) If you haven;t done it for somewhile, you'll next need to expel the reamining guff with lots of steam. Then no more probs.

Hi, it sounds like the steam trigger has a broken pin on the end inside the handle. Unplug the unit from the wall and let it cool. I found out that you can remove the main rubber cover by gently prying it up from the front and pivoting it up to the cord end and lifting it off. You will see the trigger snaps in, but look at the finger end going under the microswitch that activates the "Burst of Steam"...it is probably broken. You can get another one from California Electric Service in Concord CA; or you can epoxy a small 3/4" by 1/8" x 1/16" piece of aluminum, bent at 45 degs into trigger hollow, approx 1/4" sticking out to actuate the micro-switch and after a day or two for the epoxy to harden it should work just fine.

if no steam at all, there is most likely a small port where some particles have clogged...fill it with vinegar and water (50/50) and allow to soak 24 hrs, then reheat then shake vigorously to drain then rinse then retry
