Question about Dell Inspiron 710m Notebook
But headphone work fine. Updated driver???
Chances are that the wires connecting the speakers to the main board have been cut. The same thing happened on my 710m, I no longer have any sound and have been trying to figure out how to get replacements, I've found a few on Google, but have some apprehension about opening up the whole thing and replacing them.
Hope yours is just a driver problem.

Chances are the wire from your speakers to the motherboard was cut. I've had the same problem where the volume only worked through headphones and volume controls all worked fine. I finally had the courage to open up my laptop and saw that the wires were indeed cut. Did some research and found it was caused by opening and closing the laptop which pulls the wires. The issue is so common on the dell 710's that they even sell replacement speakers on eBay that are reinforced on the "critical breakage" areas...

Start- control panel- sounds and audio devices, click on the "Audio" menu and check if you're default sound sysem is validate, you can also see that on the "Volume "menu.
to update if necessary go to "System" in control panel then menu "Hardware" and click on device manager. In the list if you see any yellow interrogation, then it's a driver to install. Click on it to se details.
