I have no sound from the speakers, but do through the headphones. Things were fine yesterday, and I have not installed or changed anything since then.

My speakers broke. So have 3 other people's I know with the same laptop. It's not a driver or hardware setting issue.

I have no sound on my Dell Inspiron 710m - all of a sudden. It's probablt the wires like I've been reading about but who can I get to fix this??? I was surprised to see that someone had a problem after the geek squad did something - I was thinking of calling them.

Chances are that the wires connecting the speakers to the main board have been cut. The same thing happened on my 710m, I no longer have any sound and have been trying to figure out how to get replacements, I've found a few on Google, but have some apprehension about opening up the whole thing and replacing them.
Hope yours is just a driver problem.

Chances are the wire from your speakers to the motherboard was cut. I've had the same problem where the volume only worked through headphones and volume controls all worked fine. I finally had the courage to open up my laptop and saw that the wires were indeed cut. Did some research and found it was caused by opening and closing the laptop which pulls the wires. The issue is so common on the dell 710's that they even sell replacement speakers on eBay that are reinforced on the "critical breakage" areas...

Hello,

If you have the motherboard disk given to you by Dell you can re-install the drivers if not log in to the manufacturer's website and download the drivers. But the problem what you have explained it looks like the speaker might have gone faulty. If the above two steps doesnt work you might probably have to contact the manufacturer and get the speaker replaced.

Hope this helped.

Speakers are not working in dell inspiron 6000

Please connect an external speaker or headphones and check if you get sound. If sound works then the issue is with the onboard speakers in the laptop.

If sound does not work with the external speakers or headphones then the issue could be with the sound card driver or settings.

The sound will not work on my Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop. I've checked all the settings, volume, and unmute. I know it's old, but...it's all I have! :0)

Go to control panel, then choose system, hardware ,device manager and look for yellow flagged items. scroll down to sound, video, and game controllers. click on audio and update device drive. Also you may copy service tag # down and the go to www.support.dell.com . Under support and drivers there will be a place to enter the service tag. Then you should be able to see a list of updated drivers for that model. You may choose optional, recommended & urgent and they will be displayed. If you attempt to install them be sure to read about the proper order in which Dell recommends that you install them. I recently updated a Inspiron 5100. This model has an updated bios that needs to be flashed ,if yours has not been already. If you arent comfortable doing this, I would highly advise you to have someone with the knowledge on flashing the bios,do it for you. If you have a good understanding of it, there is detailed info on that site.

My Dell 710m laptop no longer produces sound from the speakers. Headphones work fine, but nothing from the speakers. All sound/volume settings are on. Any advice?

Yes, since I have one, I know where the likely failure point is on the system. The wires for the speakers go thru the right hinge assembly and if you remove the LCD hinge cover you'll likely find a broken wire there at the chafing point (That is where mine broke) so very careful wire splicing and a bit of shrink wrap did wonders.

Dell 610 lptop - haedphone not working,

First try uninstalling the sound drivers from the device manager, then reboot. It will find and reinstall them, then check Dell's support site for updated sound drivers. If you find updated drivers you will need to use the update button for the device in the device manager. If this doesn't work, then it may be a faulty headphone jack. The jack should override the speakers when the headphones are plugged into it. If you can still hear the speakers with the headphones plugged in then the jack is faulty and needs replaced. If the jack does override the speakers or if you get some static then it could be that the jack has come loose or has a loose or broken wire. The only other thing is try a different set of headphones, sometimes laptops get picky and one set will work and yet another set may not.
