Re: Gateway laptop screen blank
If your laptop does not display a POST (power on start test)information your RAM could be faulty or the RAM is not making proper electrical connection.
Try reseating your RAM (memory), remove and reinsert the memory module a few times. Then reboot your laptop.
If it still does not work, then the memory may be faulty. You could test your memory in another laptop or try memory from another laptop in your laptop, to determine whether your memory is OK or not before you commit to buy new RAM.

Test it with an external monitor. If it does not work with an external monitor, then your motherboard is defective. If your laptop works good with an external monitor, then your screen need to be replaced.
It's likely that your screen is "fried" (faulty) ... try to connect your laptop to an external VGA monitor, and see if the screen shows up (on the external monitor) properly. You may have to toggle the output display (device) from computer screen to external monitor ..using Fn+F3.
If it displays on your external monitor properly, it means your laptop screen is no good. You can replace the laptop screen, or just continue to use the external monitor.
If it does the same (blurry & different color, etc.) on your external monitor, then, your video card/module on your laptop is bad. This usually happens less often.
First make sure that this is a LCD problem to do this connect your laptop to an external monitor, so that it is confirmed that your laptop itself is fine.
If connecting the laptop to an external monitor doesn't work it would mean there is something wrong in your system. Most common problem is dislodged RAM, remove your ram and reconnect it properly.
If your system is working fine on the external monitor then go near to your LCD screen when laptop is turned on and look very closely on the screen if you see the anything on it but very dim, it would mean that you have a faulty backlight, the backlight itself is faulty or the inverter.

remove battery, unplug ac adapter and hold power button for about 30-40 seconds this will clean your video memory if this will not help try to connect your laptop to external monitor or tv then turn it on check if you can hear Windows starting sounds. If on external monitor will be ok then ist LCD issue if you cant hear any sound and on external monitor is same issue then its video card issue and you need to replace motherboard
will video work when first booting?? try to start in safe mode then if you have restore disk or applications disk remove the display video in hardware manager, sometimes the drivers get corrupted, thei may re-install video drivers. al so you might go into bios and check for setup defaults hope this works. have had similar situations on diffirerent systems. some laptops have a Fn key Function key so when you have external monitor up to system it switched=s from laptop monitor to external little picture on keys usually on or near function keys.
With the external monitor connected, try holding down the FN key and pressing one of the F keys at the top of the keyboard that has a Monitor icon on it. This should turn off the external screen and show the laptop screen. If you press it a 2nd time, BOTH screens should show up. If still blank, Press again until the External Monitor comes back on. Then go to www.dell.com/support and go to Drivers for your Model. Then download and re install the VIDEO or DISPLAY Drivers. This should fix it if its a missing driver. If STILL no display on the laptop, call Dell.
unplug everything from your laptop unplug the power from the laptop close it and turn it over remover the battery open and hold the on button(battery is still removed) for a 10 count, replace the battery
turn on you can plug the power cord if needed the prob. should be fixed
