i have the same problem my laptop is vista and i want to downgrade too. in the BIOS setup there is the mode your drivers are currently set to which would be SATA. to run xp the mode needs to be HDD. once you've done that, boot the xp disk and it should install but not if you still have drivers in the SATA mode.

my problem is finding the section where this change is made i cannot find it on my BIOS setup. i found a guide for sony vaio's but the screen print didnt match that of my bios setup. my laptop is VGN-N438M/S. what i ahte about vista is not that i cant use it but the excessive amount of RAM it takes up (over a gigabyte).

hope you have better look finding it than i am. according to the guide one screenprint showed an option you open called: standard CMOS setup and in that section has the drivers and there modes. for each driver click enter on them and they are supposed to change to HDD. my problem is finding that. it will take minutes if it is possible to do it that way

You need your XP installation CD.
Boot from XP CD.
Select R option at Boot options (for recovery Console)
Use admin password to run console.
Enter following command:
fixboot
fixmbr
cd
ren windows winvista
exit
When your PC restarts, boot onto your XP CD once again, and then proceed with setup normally to install your XP.

When you boot from XP installation CD you have several option offered.
At suggested link you can see:
"Start by booting to your XP
disc: Just insert the disc into your drive and turn on your PC, then
press the spacebar when it says Press any key to boot from CD... If you
don't see this message, you'll have to enter your PC's BIOS setup
screen and change the boot options so that your CD drive appears above
your hard drive in the boot sequence list. Consult your PC's manual for
details. (If you can't boot from your CD, you can download free XP
Setup boot disk files by searching for Q310994 at
    support.microsoft.com.)
When XP Setup starts, press R
on the first page to open the Recovery Console. If you are asked to
choose a Windows installation, type a number (usually 1) and press
    Enter.
    "
Recovery console is a powerful tool to manage your OS .
When you have your system control under recovery console you can proceed renaming the file WINDOWS into new name (WINvista) to fool XP installer telling him no newer windows exists and you can proceed with XP installation.
    Check everything on provided link.
Let me know if working OR if you have to apply to HP for (possible) roadblock removal

Are you getting a bluescreen, If you are then you need to contact your HP tech support and turn of the sata mode/ sata operations , or during installation of Windows Xp You Need to hit F6 and install sata drivers through a usb floppy drive... that is the only option... to get in to the bios to turn off Sata operations u need to hit " F10 " when u see the HP Logo When you turn the computer on...

Also please be specific about the error you are getting.. or how you are trying to downgrade....

Downgrade windows 7 to windows vista

Pl note that only Windows 7 Ultimate or Professional supports downgrade rights to Windows Vista Ultimate, Business or Windows XP Professional.
You can do a downgrade as long as you have a full version Windows Vista license.

If you are referring to Windows 7 downgrade rights, this option is specific to the manufacturer, computer model and the edition of Windows 7 you have installed.

I have HP dv6701au laptop. previously it was loaded with Vista, but now i have installed XP. The problem is that i can't get the appropriate drivers for my laptop. i had already asked the same from HP...

Before downgrading from Windows Vista to Windows XP you should always confer with your computer's manufacturers website to look up your model and see if they support the downgrade. Often times the only way for you to downgrade is to have it done before receiving the computer, since a majority of the hardware on the laptop is made specifically for Vista and is not backwards compatible. Looking on the HP website, I see that they only offer a very limited number of Windows XP drivers for your system, which tells us that downgrading is not possible.
I would recommend that you consider not downgrading but rather upgrading to Windows 7 as it is a much more stable and functional OS than its predecessor Windows Vista. You can even run Windows 7 in Windows XP compatibility mode so you can enjoy the benefits and upgrade of Windows 7 but still have the Windows XP feel and functionality. I will be writing a How-To/Tip on Windows XP Compatibility mode today so you can be on the lookout for more information on that.

Downgrading vista to xp

Now you need to find a Windows XP install disk that can match the licence number printed on the sticker at the back of the laptop and reinstall XP using your serial key.
You will have to download and install also the XP drivers, you find them on manufacturer website.

Hi, I hold a Compaq c740tu notebooke PC with the pre installed windows vista. I face problems on running certain softwares and hence would like to downgrade to Windows XP. I managed to get almost all...

Yes do not downgrade or you Will have problems. Microsoft is planning to stop support for xp in the future and already have a new OS-7 coming out to replace vista. A lot of software that does not say it is for xp will work on vista. Just because it does not say for vista does not mean it will not work on vista. Good Luck. I love Xp too but I will not downgrade to go back because microsoft is only going to make it obsolete in the future.
please rate my thank You.

Downgrade

Hi, The XP drivers for your laptop are available at the HP site http://www.hp.com/. Click on "Software & Driver Downloads" leftside near the bottom, enter your product "Pavilion dv9205us", click on "Microsoft Windows XP". May I suggest that you download them now even if still running vista and then burn to a CD or copy to a flashdrive. That way when you have downgraded to XP, the drivers are readily available. Hope this be of help/idea. Post back how things turns up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards.
