I've tried the various UDMA settings in BIOS, made sure my VIA IDE driver was up-to-date but still get very slow file transfers (6MB/s). Any ideas?

Could be several reasons, maybe it's not the moptherboard, itcould be a hard disk error. have your tried a reformat?

Boot windowsxp from USB drive not from Cd/Dvd drive

Your BIOS would need to support booting from USB. If it does then you would see the option 'Boot from USB' in the section of your BIOS where you select the boot order. Select the Boot from USB option then set the USB drive to 1st boot device.

Harddisk not detected

Hi, I think that your os has been crashed. So insert your disk and boot your system and check that your BIOS will boot from CD (Boot preference - CD ROM). And install a fresh copy of your os. Let me know the result.
