That's odd, because any USB device is hot-swappable which means it is automatically detected. Click on My Computer see if it is showing up anywhere. Is there another free USB you can use?

If the drive needs an external power source then plug this in. if not then make sure the drive is compatable with your computer and operating system. if it is and there is still the problem then there may be a problem with the drive.

I have a smartdisk firelite hardrive, is it possible to transfer the data onto a windows7 laptop. Model number of the hardrive FWFL40-N

Yes, it will work if the disk is operational and the laptop has an firewire port with all the drivers installed.
Just connect the disk and it will appear in Computer as an external disk.

WHEN I TRY TO PLUG IN A HARD DRIVE OR A PRINTER INTO ANY USB SOCKET I GET A MESSAGE SAYING USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNISED BUT IT WILL PICK UP A FLASH DRIVE PLEASE HELP

Is it an external/portable hard drive? Use the rear USB panel, if problems persist, try using your hard drive on another PC. And if you're still having problems, try replacing the USB cables of both the hard drive and printer. If it works on another PC/laptop, buy a PCI USB panel, and install it on the PCI slot of the motherboard. Hope This will help you.

Is this a USB connection? Try a different USB port. If it still won't work, go to: MY COMPUTER: PROPERTIES: DEVICE MANAGER. See what it says in there about USB DRIVERS and HARD DISC DRIVERS.

Freecom external 160gb back up - laptop not recognising back-up drive. Light is on on the drive, but that's all. Help please.

All things considered, I would use a different usb cable to attach the device to your laptop and try updating chip set drivers. The north bridge controls usb hub as well as video.

EverestHome is a software I use to ID the north and south bridge chip sets, the cpu, board, bios etc.

If the external is not detected on other machines then it could be a problem with the external drive chips or connectors.
