Open Question

HP Officejet V40 get "busy" message when entering fax #.

I use a calling card when faxing long distance from the v40. Recently I am having a problem. I will dial the calling card phone number, then when prompted I am unable to enter the calling card number. "Busy" appears on the Officejet V40 display screen. I have been faxing this way successfully for over 3years. This is a recent issue. Do you haveany suggestions. I have tried unplugging the computer cable, phone cable and power cord. Sometimes I am able to fax, other times I get the "Busy" message.

If you use XP, no driver is needed. For other OS, you can download the driver from HP website, or you can google it.

I think you like to setup it for auto FAX. In any case go to setting menu and set as auto and then set after 5 or 6 rings (or as you wish). You can also do the same if you have the utility software that come along with this Officejet model.

SOURCE: Communication error

keep the window closed ok? that's more along the lines of the phone issues, than the fax machine itself..there are many ways to outwit the phone tree issues, but each number would need to be encoded directly.

solution?

get a dedicated inexpensive fax machine, or use efax.com

Does you machine have th option for distinctive ring? this feature when activated through your telephone company will allow the machine to answer the fax or have it go to the telephone. If the machine dose not have distinctive ring you would need to purchase a comswitch (they are usualy areound $30) this device will route the fax to the fax or the telephone cal to the phone.

Cannot send faxes!

Take an ordinary phone and connect it to the auxillary port on the back of the fax. Call the number you are trying to fax and listen to see if it connects and the other fax picks up. Be sure you are using any prefix numbers required such as a 9, or a 1 and area code if required. HP recommends that you use a 2 wire phone cable, not a 4 wire (see how many metal connectors are in the jack to tell). Of course, if you are on a DSL line you want a filter installed for the fax. If this doesn't work, try a different phone cable. You could also have a bad modem in the fax. That would be last on my list. Good luck.
