I suggest using ISIS drivers instead of TWAIN. I have always had trouble with the twain drivers failing especially in paperport ive found the ISIS drivers to be much more stable.
If you do require TWAIN though best way to fix is un-install the software that the TWAIN driver came with and re-install it. Unfortunately thats the easiest solution.
If you want to try the isis drivers they should be on the cd that you used for the twain drivers just select isis instead.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

SOURCE: OCR problems for Brother MFC-8660DN with Vista 64bit

You are correct in that paperport 9 will not work on Vista and paperport 11 is the alternative. I called about a similar model and the guy at Brother told me that paperport 11 is included on an updated cd from brothermall.com for some models. It was only about $3 so you might want to check for your model. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: won't scan

This MFC works fine when hardwired to the network - eg LAN or USB connection. Wireless setup straightforward but you will encounter problems if you ever shut off the printer as it will appear 'off line' and there is no way, short of reinstalling software or spending countless hours of wasted time, trying to reestablish connectivity. If you like the printer and scanner and fax then ONLY attach hardwired to your network. Don't bother with Brother support as they will only respond with an extract from their manual on setting up the system...the answers are no help.

How to scan from a 4800 brother

Once the drivers for the printer/scanner are downloaded from Here and installed you can scan a couple of different ways.
First is to use the scanner software (ScanSoft™ PaperPort® LE for Brother) on the original cd. If it is not installed already, install the software from the disk. If you do not have an original disk, you can obtain one from Brother for a fee.
Second is to use a different method/software for scanning. Since the scanner is TWAIN compliant, you can use any software that can import from a TWAIN compliant device. Since it is common,.. you can use Microsoft Word or Publisher (Example: from Word XP - from the top menu, click on Insert - Picture - From Scanner or Camera then select your Brother 4800 from the list)
If you dont have Word or cannot obtain it, you can download and use the latest version of openOffice for free at openoffice.org Here
With either method,.. you will have to make sure the drivers are installed for the printer/scanner.
If you need any further instruction, please comment on this and I will answer your questions

Well, you purchased your all-in-one machine some time ago and it didn't include Vista-compatible software.
PaperPort is a commercial application, available from it's developer company; it's simplified version was delivered with the printer/scanner as bundled software.
As it is not a property of Brother, it cannot be made available for download on their website (as opposed to Brother drivers & utilities), because everyone would be able to download a commercial product without paying for it, that's quite understandable.

I would suggest contacting Brother support (e-mail or hotline) and asking for a Vista-compatible CD for your printer, specifying it's serial number.

HOW DO I SCAN?

Hi, normally, if you have installed the complete driver set, the easiest way is to run a program with scanning capability i.e. photoshop, or word. the software normally given with a scanner is a 'twain' which becomes linked to the photoshop program. If you have MS word (I'll use this as an exAmple ), ensure the scanner software is installed, the brother switched on and connected to the computer correctly click Insert select picture then scanner - (or it may say twain). At this point the Brother mini program - the 'twain' should start and then follow the scanner instructions and a scan of whAtever you have selected should be inserted into the word document. Bit of trivia - TWAIN stands for Tool With An Interesting Name - yup it really is!.

What are the instructions to scan using Brother DCP 1000? I laid the docment face down and pressed Scan To and nothing happens but showing another selection in the glass window.

To Scan on Brother DCP 1000 you need to click on the "Paperport" Icon on the desktop. Then Click on "Twain." Lay your document to be scanned face down on the scanner glass. Press the "Scan To" button on the Brother DCP 1000 printer. On the "Twain" window click on "Start." Note: When I clicked on "Start" it initially scanned blanks. I clicked on "PreScan" and saw an image. Then I again clicked on "Scan" and it worked. I named each document I scanned and saved them in a folder for later use.
