I have a snowy frost across the back 1/3 of the freezer panel. I used a hair dryer to defrost it and it got the air flowing back into the refrigerator. What is the best way to go about determining what is the problem that needs to be fixed

    1. defrost heater?

    2. thermostat?

    3. timer/control board?

Are these things that can be checked on and fixed by a novice handyman as myself?

    Thanks for you help!

You must not be getting any air flow into the refr section. make sure the fan is running and if so then you may have a defrost problem. look at the freezer section rear panel, if it has heavy frost on it then it is not defrosting properly. there are a few problems that could cause a defrost issue. defrost heater, thermostat, or timer/control board. most likely the defrost thermostat.
if it is frosted over, then shut off the unit and get ready to catch the extra water that will run onto the floor, after a full day turn it back on and if it cools, you will know that you are not defrosting. it will work ok until it frosts over again, in about 2 weeks. then you will need to find out which part is bad causing the no defrost.

well i would say your not as novice as you think. you have all 3 items that control the defrost cycle.
the most common one to fail is the thermostat, then 2nd the control, whether a timer on board, and last the heater.
if you can get the rear panel off the freezer section then you can get to the thermostat. i would start with replacing that. it has 2 wires on it and is about a 1" round device. try that first and if after another week or 2 you still get that frost build up, then come back with a model # and i might be able to get you some more info.
p.s. the defrost thermostat should cost about 20-30 bucks.

Bottom drawer of the refrigerator freezes the fruit.

I think the thermostat is faulty. Thus it makes the freezer extra cold. Try replacing it. Regards, Nandini.

I had this problem with my Kenmore bottom freezer drawer also. I found that the problem was I had too much weight at the very front of the drawer. Try reorganizing and moving items, especially heavier items away from the very front. Worked for me.

You are probably storing items too close to the top shelf of the freezer, stopping circulation.

Kenmore fridge and freezer not cooling

Check to see if there is any ice built up on the back wall of the freezer. If so thaw the ice and take the back wall out of the freezer. next check to see if the fan is running in the freezer (evaporator fan) This fan is what circulates the air from the freezer to the fridge. If it does run then you have a defrost problem (if ice is on the coils and back wall). Then replace defrost timer, heater, and thermostat.

Freezer Drawer won't open on Kenmore 22" Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

Try raising the door. It may be off the roller tracks inside. If you get it to open you'll find the problem. These tracks are like kitchen drawer tracks.
