Question about Harman Kardon AVR 35 Receiver

1 Answer

DVD player and receiver will not play a dvd in surround sound ?

I have a Harmon Kardon AVR 35 Receiver and a Pioneer DV-414 DVD player that are both 8-10 years old. I am trying to play a new dvd that is in surround sound but won't play in surround ( David Foster-Hitman) - I confirmed this on another dvd player at a video store

Not sure if the receiver is incorrectly reading the dvd as 2 channel and not surround sound or the dvd player is not reading the dvd properly - not exactly sure what machine is responsible for reading what.

Any changes in technology that older machines can't pick up ?

The dvd player is responsible for reading the surround sound track, and sending it to the receiver. First make sure you are playing the surround sound track on the dvd, many have a stereo track too. Next, try another dvd and see if you can play surround sound on that one. If you can't play surround on ANY dvd I would start looking at the audio connection from dvd to receiver. Are you using an optical cable? Red, white, and yellow RCA cables? Optical will transmit any sound over only one cable, RCA cables need one cable for each channel (LF, C, RF, LR, RR, sub.) If your connections are correct, is the receiver set to play a surround sound track? Is it set in 2 channel mode?

Use your remote to get into the Menu. Look for something called audio, or audio properties. In there you can choose your inputs (sources) and output choices.

On the remote itself, there should be a button called input, or source. That would be for things input to the TV.....such as dvd, vcr.

Sounds like the setup info got scrambled in the receiver. Re-program the TV input...from optical or coax or whatever way it is going into the receiver.

Harmon Kardon AVR 235 no sound

Ensure that your speakers are connected to the terminals that you have your speaker selector switch turned to.
Then check that you have your device, whether it be a CD or DVD player, or turntable, plugged into the correct input and that you also have the correct input selected on the receiver.

Humming noise

Usually Humming noises come from frequency interferance.  In this case it is being caused by your input sources.  A smiply solution is to replace the cables and or seperate the source cables away from any electircal cords or sources.
