1 Answer

Unresponsive harddrive I have a similar problem. I have a SimpleTech 320 GB external harddrive that fell when my brother was pushed into the table. It starts up (Spins), clicks, dies, starts up, clicks, dies, starts up, clicks, dies, and then there is no response.

Well, it works now. Don't know how. It still clicks everynow and again, but the port on the HD for the USB cable was moved out of place. This is what I think caused it, but thanks anyways.

Hi,
you have definitely got a dead HD (hard-drive) there, nothing you can do about it.
sounds like the force of the shock has damaged the HD beyond repair.
HD work by i high precision arm that reads data on a spinning platter, the chances are you have damaged the arm and the click is where the arm is trying to read the HD with no luck

sorry

There is a way of checking the HD health now that it is running but it is only a 'try'

Assuming your external HD has software called S.M.A.R.T built into it, we will be able to see how well the HD is running but we do need to instal a program onto your computer

do you want to try it?

My external harddrive fell and its not working. Is there any way this can fix or am i going to have to buy a new one? thanks

Inside this External HardDrive is I believe a Internal Laptop HardDrive. On You Tube there are videos of how to dismantle it, just type the name in You Tube and if you get leads you should be able to connect it inside a P.C. and retrieve yours important files.
If the connections are the same as an Internal P.C. HardDrive your in luck.

If you get no joy using the Troubleshooting Guide then try this...
You will need to check You Tube to find a Dismantle on your product and follow the step guide on here, the procedure should be similar.
Check 1st that your External HDD has an P.C. internal HDD inside, from You Tube, before dismatle of your External HDD.
Once your happy that it has continue reading and follow the step guide on the link below.
My neighbour has the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500GB, and in under 2 weeks it started to beep and was not reconized by any Laptop or P.C. if this is the same for you with any FreeAgent Desk series ( not GO series, different procedure for GO products). I have a 500GB external SimpleTech HD. Tonight it

If it was running at the time it fell, the heads crashed into the platters, and the buzzing you're hearing is the dents left in the platters spinning by 7200 times a second.
Not good. Likely will need a professional service to recover the data.

Simpletech 500 GB external hard drive - unresponsive

If you really can not get it to work anymore, you could try opening it up and connecting the hdd directly on a IDE/SATA port in your computer. This will only work if you have a desktop, for a laptop you would need all kinds of converters.

Simpletech 320 gb

It has to do with the way computers count. Computers count in binary where we count in decimal.
Hard drive makers list there drives capacities in the decimal format, where windows lists it in it's binary format.
Wikipedia has a good explanation.

Also, the drive may have some preinstalled software on it that could be taking up a bit of space (it's usually not much).
