Question about Toshiba 53H71 53 in. Rear Projection Television

53HX71 Replaced STK392-110 about 7 months ago worked convergence failed again

I replaced the STK392-110's about 7 months ago and the TV picture looked beautiful. Yesterday I saw a wavy blink, and the blue horizontal waves started. Today the red and blue have started to fail. I had the ic's professionally soldered and the soldering quality looked outstanding. He used thermal compound quite liberally so I am not sure that's the problem. I think there are two possibilities if the STK's failed again: overheating or a bad quality part. Can you suggest a good part's site, and any other possibilities before I swap them out again? Or is there an upgraded part number to replace these?

Thermal compound should be used SPARINGLY for maximum effect. There should be enough to create a thin film over the entire mating surface. Too much compound reduces the heat transfer from component to heat sink. I buy parts from They are reputable and I can drop by on my way to work :-)

Toshiba TP48C90 Convergence (replaced ICs, worked for 2 days)

Well, my thought is that there are a ton of knock off generic convergence IC's out there that usually hold up as long as yours did. Professionals like me will only use Sanyo original STK's. The counterfeit STK's out there are everywhere. Do some research on the web to locate Sanyo originals, they are out there.

TV Shuts off by iself!

Don't feel bad about Mits. All the projection companies and all the new TVs have markedly poorer reliability than the good old CRT types. You should see all the class action lawsuits against even some of the best companies!

The power supply section is not working.
Common possibilities are:
- Convergences amps have failed overloading the supply
- High-voltage section (flyback transformer) has failed
(happens sooner or later, about 8 years typical))
- CRT tube has failed overloading the supply
- Power surge has popped the power input circuit.
(Fuse, rectifier diodes, turn-on relay etc)
- One of a hundred of electrolytic capacitors has failed short overloading the supply. They dry out with age, are cheap to replace, but hard to find which one it is.
- Or any of many other possibilities.

In short, you need a experianced tech to troubleshoot this.
