The problem you are describing seems to be one of Genuine parts compatibility? Are you inserting the Canon replacement cartridges? if not then the printer will fail to communicate with them. I had the same problem, unfortunately these replacement/s carry printed circuits with information chips that only communicate with their genuine machine/s.
If the cartridges are genuine then maybe a fault on their circuit boards/chips and should be returned to the seller.

The manual for the PIXMA iP1600 says the following concerning the 5 blinks:
The ink cartridges are not properly installed, or a non-supported ink cartridge is installed (the ink cartridge EEPROM data is abnormal). Install the ink cartridges properly. Or, confirm that the supported ink cartridges are installed.
If you haven't already I would take a look at the electrical contacts on the cartridge to make sure they are clean (free of dust and ink) and then reinstall them in the printer. If the printer gives the same error, it's time to buy a new cartridge. 3 refills from a cartridge is not bad at all.
Dear hoppygink, Canon pixma ip1200 series (ip1200,1600,2200) identify the first new cartridge installed in the printer and detects ink level properly unless you put another used cartridge or you its own cartridge to another printer. Once you do this, ink level of the cartridge become unknown. So, never exchange its own cartridge with another ip1600 printer. This will be back to normal condition when you replace with new fresh one catridge that never used before. This weakness has been improved by canon in pixma ip1300 series (ip1300 & 1700) anyway. To prevent this problem occurs, you need to back up EEPROM data of the printer by using EEPROM restore tools before perform cartridge exchange. Dear lim, Here a solution for you. The cartridge of this printer has memory chip that store ink level data inside. Once the cartridge is empty we cannot restore ink level data to be full. To continue using refilled cartridge you need to deactivate ink level detection function first. Perform this step: when the message 'The following cartridge cannot be recognized' appears press Resume/Cancel button. Do this for each cartridge you refill;if you refill both black & colour cartridge do this tip two times (once for each cartridge). Please rate this as fixya ok. Regards,
Go here. Type "how to install ink" in the search box. Click "Search", then select "How do I install the ink cartridge(s)". You will get instructions with pictures on how to prepare and install the cartridges.
Use a Q-Tip and some clean water to clean the contacts behind the cartridge in the printer and on the cartridge itself. Then use a pencil with a clean eraser to polish the contacts. Be careful not to touch the part where the ink comes out of the cartridge.
1. Just open and close the cover a bid, this will initiate new checking of all ink cartridges 2. clean the contacts of the inkcartridge chip e.g. with spirit 3. Press the reset/stop-button for >10s to quit the error ... but be aware that the ink level will no longer shon correctly
