SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

Hello there, I have a Nikon Coolpix L4, and I'm trying to use a 4GB memory card in it that was most recently used in a Canon digital camera. I'm getting the error that "this card cannot be...

Sorry to tell you, but your older camera will not work with 4GB or higher SDHC cards. Your camera was designed before SDHC format came out. You'll need to use 2GB or less standard SD cards. These are relatively inexpensive these days, and are easily found on Amazon, just in case your local store no longer carries them. For others reading, there are several other possible causes for memory card problems, with troubleshooting steps that may be viewed here.

A message always shows "MEMORY CARD IS WRITE

If you take out the memory card and look at it... it has a little button on the side... slide it over.... and then slap it back in the camera and that should take care of the problem.

You can also get the memory card locked/protected message if you are trying to use a SDHC card in a camera that does not support High Capacity (HC). High Capacity is any SD card with over 2GB of memory space.

Hope this helps.

The L4 and its software will work with any size SD cards. Make sure you get SD cards, not SDHC cards. SD cards go up to 2GB, while SDHC cards start at 4GB and go up.

Cannot get write protection off my memory card for my Nikkon Coolpix L4

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

Memory card is write protected

On the side edge of the card, there is a TINY switch. Unlock the switch and the card will no longer be write protected.

Back up all the pictures on the card and then format the card.. Everything will be back to normal.
Note: While formatting select FAT32 file system as it is more reliable..

Memory card malfunction

Pictures can sometimes be recovered by sending the card to a service provider, or by downloading software designed to recover the pictures from the card. It is not clear weather the problem is the card or the camera, however to recover the pictures from the card would be the same process. If you do not have one you will need to buy a USB card reader to load the card on the computer. Consider buying another card to test in the camera, if you so wish. If the camera is new enough also consider contacting the manufacturer for warranty assistance. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
