Can't close garage door without holding button down

My remotes and keypad work great to open the door, but when I try to close it, the light just blinks and nothing happens. I see others have had this same problem, but there is no solution posted. This just started happening (consistently) about a month ago, and it's making me crazy! Please help...

Thanks for your response...I've checked over and over and can't see anything that would block the infrared. something else? Is there any kind of 'sensitivity' setting on the unit that I can set?

Okay, how do I know if the lights are 'aligned'? One of them shows steady amber, and the other one blinks (stutters) on green.

Its nothing with the light will flash, because the resistor of it has different flow,, it will not function, maybe the resistor for the functioning flow has the defected, you need to go to the HARDWARE electronics technician,, because the program of functioning is damaged

no, if the flash of the light will on,, it will not interrupt because the resistor has separate the flow of the current, it probably the signal flow has CONFLICT on it, because at the first the lightning and the functioning of the remote has made it systematicaly, it will not interrupt, the problem on it is the current flow,, there might be some circuit has defected on it

If the light on the opener blicks when you try to close it usually means that the safety light is interupted. With the garage door open, look at the bottom of each side of the garage door. You will notice a little square box( usually on both sides.) there is a beam of light that needs to go from on box to the other. It is a safety device to keep people from being injured when they are in the path of the door as it comes down.

See that there is nothing obstructing the light beam and that they are aligned with one another.

If the Safety light seems ok, You may need to adjust the downward pressure especially if you live in a colder climate.(Thing don't like to move in the cold!!)

Good Luck, Phil

Both lights should be green, you need to get down to the sensor level and adjust the yellow one until it turhs green. You may need a set of pliers.

Good luck and please rate this response, Phil

This is most often caused by something blocking the infrared beam from the sensors located near the bottom of the door on both sides.

This is a child safety device and also protects the door/motor from closing onto an object i the doors path.

Make sure nothing has covered one of the sensors or is in the way of the beam.

If there is nothing, you could have one going bad.

Let me know if you have any additional issues.

You can change the closing strength.

I would oil the moving parts first, all the rollers, track atc (white lithium grease is best, WD40 just runs off and washes out other oils)

If it has gotten stiffer over the years due to wear and tear, lubricating and changing the closeing sensitivity may solve the problem.

Lube first, then manually open and close the door a few times.

Look on the sides and back of the closer box (you may have to lift/remove cover) for two small inset knobs. One says close, the other open. Turn the close (Usually clockwise, but not all models) untill you have downward operation.

I have a Sears craftsman model 139.53637SRT garage door opener. My remote has not worked in a long time. I use the wall control button and have to hold the button in order to open or close the garage door....

It sounds like your door sensors may be bad or misaligned. Make sure the small light on each sensor is lit and not flickering. That could be the cause of your having to hold the wall button down until the door is closed. You can buy a universal remote but if you only had one remote before it could be the receiver that has quit. A new remote would not fix that but the only way to find out is to try.

Can open my garage door with the remote just fine, but it will not close the door. When I try to close it from the button inside the garage I have to hold it down until the door is all the way closed,...

Check your door sensors. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not flickering ever so slightly. Tweak them a little. If you cannot get both lights to come on you have bad sensors.

My garage door won't close unless I hold the main button down in the garage. As soon as it closes it opens up again unless I press the button quickly. I can open it up using the remote, but cannot close it...

your garage door has saftey sensors at the door
these are photo eyes
in the owners manuel that came with the opener
that has pictures in it which would help
the photo eyes need to be clear of debri and aimed at each other with no obstruction
there are leds on each sensor and when aimes properly they should be light if i remember correctly
if you can not get them to light then you may have to replace the sensors

Door won't close, with out hold down on button.

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not blinking.

Garage door keypad & remote

You need to sync both. I have a LiftMaster. If you want to change the code on your keypad you need to open up the garage door motor compartment where the light is (mine is in the back). Press the learn button, within 30 seconds enter the new code on your keypad and hold down the enter button for several seconds until the light on the opener blinks to tell you it has learned the code. Test the new code to see if it works. If the new keypad code works, then try the remote. My remote will not work after I reprogram the keypad. If the remote does not work (check battery) then climb back up the ladder and press the learn button on the garage door motor again, press the remote button and hold down until the light blinks again and the opener has learned the new code. This process works when I need to sync my remote and keypad. Good luck, I hope this helps.
