He took the cabnit off???...ok now kneal or stoop straight down,,always unplug unit..now your looking at the pump ,,theres 2 clips holding pump on 1 upper and 1 lower take a small screw driver and pry them off twist just a touch ,let pump hang dont remove ,,now your looking at the motor ,,it also have to clips but there longer and they have to screws holding them through front...take your 1/4 nut drive and remove,,if you dont have nut driver pliers will do just take your time..now reach to your right side of motor and disconnect motor ,,put a little pressure with your hand and pull straight out...take the motor clips off the same way you took the pump clips off,,now you should have 2 plastic couper and 1 rubber grommet...remove broken pieces than put 1 half the plastic coupling all the way on the transmission line it up straight then knock t in with he back of your screw driver use another tool to knock with..now put the other coupling on the back of the motor the same way..take the rubber grommet and put it on the transmission side,,you must look and line teeth up with hole since the grommet is on 1 coupling you only need to line up motor have,,,now take 1 motor clip and put the bottom 1 back before you put motor back let it lay on floor,,put the top clip close ,,now left motor and push to the tranny coupler now put back top clip...reverse to put together..

Washing Machine Motor Coupling Repair

How do you tell if your washer motor coupler has gone bad? Motor couplers are used on "Whirlpool" direct-drive washing machines. In some Whirlpool or Whirlpool-made washing machines, the motor coupler connects the drive motor to the transmission. It operates under extreme conditions and stress. Mostly during start-up and stopping of the motor. The main symptom of a bad motor coupler in the Whirlpool made washing machines is that there is no agitation or spinning action, along with the sound of the motor running. Since the motor is running, but there is no connection to the transmission, the machine will not agitate or spin the clothes out. The motor will simply run, but nothing else happens. In this case, the coupler is most likely cracked. To replace the coupler in the Whirlpool made washer, you must first unplug the washer, remove the top console by either removing the screws or using a putty knife to unsnap the top clips, rotate the console back, pull the washer front off by tilting back, and set the cabinet aside. Remove the clips holding the pump and motor on. Remove the bolts holding the motor on. Inspect the coupler and replace with a coupler if necessary. Re-assemble the motor and pump assembly. Re-assemble the washer in reverse order of disassembly. Plug in and test by running the washer through it's paces. Here is a video on repairing the motor coupler.

My husband replaced the coupling on our kenmore

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

I'd verify that the Motor Coupler is installed correctly first.

I'd also verify that the Lid Switch was re-connected after replacing the coupler. (A common oops that I've done myself)

If it was, I'd test the Lid Switch by jumping the two outermost contacts with a short piece of insulated wire.

See the Whirlpool Service manual for their top load, direct drive washers for how to bypass the switch.

My washer will fill with water and do nothing else what could be wrong

It doesn't agitate If your washer doesn't agitate, check these: Lid switch Motor coupler Belts Clutch Drive motor Drive pulleys Transmission Agitator Lid switch If the lid switch is defective, the washing machine may not agitate or function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it. Motor coupler Many washers produced by Whirlpool® use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. If this happens, you need to completely replace it. Belts Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.) Clutch If your washer was made by GE®, it may use a clutch for agitating the clothes. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the washer from agitating well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician. Drive motor Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor. Drive pulleys

I need to replace the coupler on my direct drive whirlpool washer

Access to the motor is better from the bottom. Lay the washer on its side.

I have an older model Kenmore washer - stopped spinning and aggitating - I took the control panel off, how do I reach the belt?

Your problem may not be a belt some Whirlpool built Kenmore washers are direct drive and have a coupler instead of a belt. The coupler is located on top of the motor. It consists of three parts two with prongs and one with holes for each of the prongs. If this is broken or badly worn the washer will not agitate or spin. Good luck. Oh the drive coupler part number is 285753A.
